Your scholarship dollars at work!
Jade Louie (with uke) is teaching these children to play the steel guitar. The HSGA purchased the instruments and accessories.

Cool! To have even 1 kid learning steel is awesome, but 5, most with big smiles on their faces?! WAY COOL.
Match this with the classes headed by Neil Scott, and we have a full on mini revival happening!
I know I'm a happy camper.
I ran into the 3 kid's from Neil's class again on the bus this morning. All 3 were packing their newly made steels.
As we went our seperate ways, I see these 3 with their guitars in their backpacks, ready to take on the world, and it's a sight that will live with me forever. Wish I had a camera to add to Gerald's pic.
What a great time to be alive!

Thanks for sharing Gerald. My hats off to all who do what they can to encourage our young people to learn to play the steel guitar.
Those classes remind me of my days with Harlin Bros. 60 yrs. ago in Indianapolis Ind., starting out with those Oahu acoustic Hawaiian guitars and using the Oahu method for learning.
Music is much too important to be left entirely in the hands of proffessionals.  |

I teach 20 (seniors) on steel along with 17 (seniors) on ukulele. They are a fun bunch and eager to learn. It's so gratifying to see the younger generation taking up the Hawaiian guitar in this day of rock guitar, et al. Really neat to see this happening. Love to hear them sometime if at all possible.  |

This is the most beautiful photo I've seen in a long time. Just imagine what these young steel players will sound like in a couple years. We should have them at the 2009 HSGA convention in Honolulu. We should all try to encourage them and their teacher.
