I've been hired to chart songs for the theater at which I recently started playing. Currently, I plan to do it on a spreadsheet (OpenOffice.org) but I'm wondering if there's a program specifically created for charting songs in the Nashville Number system.
Does anyone know of such a program? Here's the sort of output I'd like to create.
Ideally, such software would have options for using colors, adding "player notes and tips", etc. _________________ Gary Shepherd

BIAB? i dont know that it does...just thinking it might be able to.
there is something called "tabledit" too. I know almost nothing about it accept that it is a fancy tablature program with a million bells and whistles..perhaps it has the capabilities you seek?
best of luck |

BIAB absolutely does! It'll convert any song from a standard chord chart to Nashville Numbers, or Roman Numerals, or Solfege (do re mi) |

I have both of those and the spreadsheet is better than either one for this purpose. Any other ideas? _________________ Gary Shepherd

Where is the key signature for the song?
Are all the songs for your gig just pop tunes? |

I use a PrintMusic. It's by Finale and it's basically the same program, but without some bells & whistles, and the big price tag.
Here's a number chart....

Interesting. I may try that one out. Wish I could see all the characters before ordering. I suppose I could just make my own font but that's a lot of work. _________________ Gary Shepherd

Hey Gary...
Did you mean you ordered the package or that you got an ad about it? _________________ Gary Shepherd

I ordered the package. It is available for a download, but I waited for the CD. It is loaded with fonts, and it works with my Word program. It takes a little bit of getting the hang of it, but I am getting better at it everytime I use it. The price is really great! |

Skip, that's not a bad looking chart but I need something a little more compact. More like what I posted above. _________________ Gary Shepherd

Gary
I have BIAB and other similar programs. I think that a simple Excel spreadsheet arrangement is the most compact and quickest way to chart a song. You can colour in some of the cells to make it look fancier when it is printed. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. You're probably right. I think I'm going to try the font package that Gary Watkins suggested. It has a few cool things that I can't do with normal fonts. Specifically, the rooted chords like 4 over 1. I know I can do something like that with a normal font (and I did in my picture above) but I'd rather have a font specifically made for it. _________________ Gary Shepherd

FWIW
BIAB for Windows (not Mac) has a program called Audio Chord Wizard.
Play an mp3 file and it will chart the song change by change. The only input it needs is the downbeat.
It will print nashville number, letter chord, Roman numeral chords. your choice.
One may "jazz up" the chords or dumb down the chords. The program will give you the bass lines also. jazzed up or dumb down. All the 7ths, minors, dim etc are noted.
4 measures per line.
It happens on the fly.
Check the results and print. Very professional, accurate, fast.
IF a song has 3 pick-up notes, for example, you must hit a computer key on the down beat.
That is it.
Try it you will like it. |

Yeah. I messed around with that feature a few days ago just to see how well it worked. I did a surprisingly good job of picking out the chords. Even better, when you press the playback button, it plays the original wav file and the midi stuff back at the same time so you can hear what you see. Pretty good. _________________ Gary Shepherd
