New to the Board and New to the Steel

I look forward to learning more about this animal they call Steel.
I am from Lubbock, but am living in Roswell, NM. I am working through Newman's PSG 101 (slowly), and hope to get some lessons sooner than later. Any recommendations on teachers in my area and suggestions for beginners is much appreciated!

Welcome, I'm from Lubbock myself, although it's been a few 100 years or so since I lived there. I still get back to see the family every other year or so though. Check out Greg Cutshaw's site. I've gotten lots of great stuff there.

I heard a guy in Lubbuck in the 70's who played so great that I wanted to put my steel in the pawn shop..His name was Lloyd Maines.

I was lucky to play with Lloyd for a few years in the Joe Ely Band back then and he was the best musician on any instrument that I ever played with. He's gotten known more for his producing since then, but I stood next to him night after night and watched just blow the roof off of every place we played.

My only claim to fame is playing in Joe Ely's first band, in hi school. We wore Beatle jackets.

Rick,I was playing with B.W. Stevenson back then...We did a lot of shows with Joe Ely in Lubbock,I might have met you?Joe had Tiny on drums,and I met Don Caldwell...he had a studio that Lloyd worked at,Stu

I bet we did some of those same shows together. We started out with just Joe and me, then added Lloyd, Caldwell and Tiny and a guy named Greg Wright on bass. I'll be damned, small world. Caldwell is still in Lubbock and runs the Cactus Theater now as well as his studio. Tiny passed away a few years ago.
