I'm in the process of redoing a Sierra D-10 that I just got that had a non-standard tuning. Since I'm re-rodding it anyway, I'm considering switching pedal 4 with pedal 8 so that the BooWah will be next to pedal 5. Has anybody tried this swap? |

Had it there from my first double neck emmons some 25+ years. It just seems like a natural progression to me from 4 to 5.
You're gonna get a mixed bag of responses probably slanted toward leaving it on the 8 pedal, but, basically, I think it's like most things on the pedal steel. You just kinda get used to your set-up so that you're able to make it do what you want. If you keep a few extra rods around, you can always change it back if it doesn't suit you
Only drawback I can see is if you use P4 for your Franklin pedal on E9. That would be a lot of pulls on the same pedal. Could make for a stiff feel. Best of luck with your Sierra. JO. |

I agree, pedal 4 for the boo-wha. I have the Jeff Newman U-12 setup and use this change with pedal 5. |

I have U=12's with 8 and 6 and I use the # 8 for my maj7th and the 4 for boooowaaaa , like Jeff Newman said, seems like the natural place for it, but it didn't start out like that , and if you have it the other way you can get some cool stuff with 4 and 5 , so who's to say , like the guy said its just what you get used to, - I think if the world was turned back they would have done it our way and put it on the number four Rich Cottle |

The BOO WAH on pedal 8 is good enough for B.E., so it should be good enough for everyone.

Yeah, Pedal 8 should be put on the pedal 4 position, IMHO. Whenever you take your foot off the VP there is a chance of messing up the volume..not nice. |

I got mine P8 on P4. Would not go back. I also have my P4 on a LKL so you have all three right there together. |

Don't want to sound completely stupid here but what exactly does the boowah pedal do? Is it on the C6 neck or the E9? Just curious. |

Nigel: you use it on the the sixth neck ,it takes you from the one chord to the six chord as a seventh/sharped nine chord , then the 5 pedal gives you a (a 2 seventh chord ) and back one fret (gives you a 5 13th , and then back one fret up to the one chord , works great in night life Rich Cottle

Hey Nigel, It is on the C6th neck and there is a lot of play between the 5th and 8th pedal on tunes such as "Hold It" and "The Alley". You are actually going from a D to an A7th or D7th to A Aug9..great on rock stuff...pedals 5 and 8 ought to be together IMHO...that's why a lot of guys put pedal 8 in the pedal 4 position |

Yeah me too, I've had the boo-wah on my 1st C6th pedal since 1982 ...it has always worked for me in that setup --- and i have never played "Hold it" |

It seems to me that it makes waaaaaaay more musical sense to have it on the far left of the C6th pedals rather than the far right.
That said, though, I'm such a creature of habit that I've tried several times to put it on the left side and always move it back to the far right. It just works for me better there after all these years. |

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm going to put the BooWah in the #4 spot. I'm intrigued about putting the major 7th (old #4) on one of the knee levers as Matthew suggested. The steel I'm working on has 9 pedals and I've decided against adding a Franklin so I'll have room for extra Cth pulls to experiment with. |
