I'm thinking of putting this on an unused non pedal steel I have. Has anyone tried a combo tuning like this? Except for 1 missing string in each tuning its C6 intervals on the bottom 8 and E9 intervals on the top 7.
Low to Hi
C F A C E G C E B D
It appears to have a I, IIIm,IV, V, VIm available as well as a V sus 4, I and IV maj7, and a I add 9 chord. Probably many others. |

If I didn't have a tuning that I like better, I'd tune a single-10 to an all around tuning like E9/13:
Lo-to-Hi
E~B~D~E~F#~G#~B~C#~E~G# or,
C9/13: C~G~Bb~C~D~E~G~A~C~E _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

Your tuning is very similar to Maurice Anderson's 12 string non-pedal tuning. DFACEGACEGBD (low to hi)

Rich, that does look very similar. I think I will give it a try and see if it covers enough bases for me. I can see why Maurice would go to 12 string for non pedal. His tuning completes what mine will lack; the upper relative minor, and the high G to complete that major triad. |

Greg,
If I was to use a variation of this, I would drop the low C and add the missing A. Bobbe Seymour and others use a non-pedal 8-string tuning of FACEGACE (low-to-hi). You would just be adding the two chromatic strings to that tuning.

Having heard Reece's dazzling display of his 12-string tuning (mentioned above) on the Super Slide DVD, I'd use the first 10 strings of that. |

Chalker once told me that no matter what his Copedent, he would always tune his Basic C6 like this: (Lo-to-Hi)
A~D~F~A~C~E~G~A~C~E, so; adding ~B~D to the top sounds good to me, or you'll have to go to 13-str. if you want to include the high-(G) in #3 position! But, even that's not out of the question! J. Thorpe and Bill Stafford used/use 14-strings! Have you got a ‘crowbar’ handy? Your bass side is basically the same as my 10-string non-pedal tuning.

We're getting down to push & shove here! Their tunings were/are not necessarily Non-Pedal, but; that's beside the point! Any tuning can be played Non-Pedal Style!
Bill Stafford's 14-str., if my memory is accurate!
E9/B6 - Universal-Tuning: (Lo-to-Hi)

John - what is the purpose of the string 1 G# in that 14 string tuning, or is it a typo? I notice there's also 4 E's! is that low one the same pitch as Bass guitar low E? Greg; I've never played a 14-str., but; you are correct in your thinking! The first G#-string is identical in pitch to String #4 and it did not change pitch at any time, but; I'm not up to date on the present copedent. When used in conjunction with the (A)-(B) pedals creates an A Maj.7! There are also (4)-octaves of (E). I think the Lowest (E) was somewhere around .085w or perhaps larger! To the best of my recollection, Bill Stafford's 14-str. originally had 8-pedals and 6-knee~levers. _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

I have John's E 13th tuning on my pedal steel (always have) and can play a Hawaiian luau , also do many pop standards and tons of Bob Wills and western swing - all without touching any pedals.
My advice, experiment, experiment and experiment some more until YOU find something YOU like.

Jim - I agree 100%. Playing steel/reso live has especially narrowed my focus of what I like in a tuning and what I tend to ignore. I can plot the best tuning on paper all day but when the song starts its all about ease of navigation and being able to translate to the strings what I hear in my head. |
