I know about The Time Jumpers Monday night at the Station Inn - I'll be there Lord willin' and the creeks don't rise.

What other steel guitar oriented shows this week? Thanks.

Hey Dave,

Every Monday from 6-10 there's another great Western Swing band; "John England and his Western Swingers" at "Robert's Western World" on Lower Broadway, they play from 6-10 so it's possible to go there and then to the Timejumpers (which I've been known to do myself). Tommy Hannum plays steel, tonight's a "CD release party" and I even heard rumors of free beer and food. I'm gonna try to swing by there at some point.

Not steel oriented, but a rare opportunity Thursday night: "Earl Scruggs and Friends" at the Ryman, with opening act "The Fabulous Stringdusters" who are also really good...

I'm not up to speed on exactly who's playing when on lower Broad, which is where most of the steel action is; it changes a lot but on any given night I'm sure you'd find some good steel in at least one of the many clubs (and probably a lot of bad music too!). Since there's no cover in any of them you can just wander in to all of them until you find something decent...

Cool - hopefully there's some tickets left for Merle Wednesday, and I'll hit everything I can tonight. Good thing I finally got some sleep.

Since I also play bluegrass b@njo, Thursday is also a must-see for me. I knew I wasn't gonna get any work done. Smile

Dave; My friend Frank tells me he'll be with you tonight (Monday)! He not too shabby on steel himself, I guess you know! Have a great week here!

Yes, Big John. First down to Robert's for John England and the Western Swingers, then met Frank (Parish - yep, I know he's a fine player too) down at the Station Inn for the Time Jumpers. Smiley Roberts, Shorty Rogers, and a bunch of other steel players were there. I can't imagine any steel player coming here for a visit and not catching these shows, which are Monday night regulars. Tommy Hannum and Paul Franklin both showed what consummate pros they are. What also amazed me was the fact that I could bring my daughter and her boyfriend in with parental/guardian supervision either place. That is unheard of where I'm at - it's difficult to get my own kid into most shows I play.

My wife's from Gallatin, so we have spent quite a bit of time down here over the last 30+ years. But until recently, I always had a guitar player's perspective. It's a nice difference - the steel player community seems, to me, to be much tighter. But that sure doesn't stop me from enjoying the guitar playing of Andy Reiss and Ranger Doug Green. Andy's as good as anybody out there, and Ranger Doug deftly comps on that gorgeous and great-sounding Stromberg cutaway acoustic archtop - shades of Freddie Green, just great.
