I have been studying the You tube videos by the great David Hartley, trying to pick up a move or two. Besides that fact that his intonation is flawless, I listen to the line and try to play it the way I hear it. On many of his licks I noticed that instead of using a lever to play a note (like I would look for)in the lick without moving the bar off the fret, David will sometimes opt for moving the bar down or a up a fret or two to get to the same note. I was just wondering is there an advantage to moving the bar instead of just using a lever? Does it make for a smoother lick to quickly move the bar up a fret then back instead of using a lever. I know David uses levers quite a bit but it was very instructive for me to see when he opts to just move the bar.My question is should I always search for the most efficient way to play a lick (with the least bar movement using a lever)or should I just go for the nearest correct note in a linear move like you would on a six string to get the best sounding melodic line? Or should I just shutup and just play whatever I hear? Any tips?

Levers, regardless of who is using them, just aren't as quick as a hand move, or a foot pedal. Playing by moving the bar saves wear and tear on the guitar, which reduces mechanical noises from the steel, and also helps with string breakage. It also helps your left hand speed, which you will need, sooner or later.

Often easier with a bar move instead of a lever move but a different sound. Depends on how you want to hear the line you play.

Mitch,

When playing some passages and using certain string combinations,it may be necessary to move the bar up or down a fret or two and use a pedal/lever combination in order to get the particular phrasing you want.

I just use the bar since I don't use my knee levers hardly. I feel that usin' the bar is a lot easier for me.

Moving the bar works fine for single note stuff, but pedals and levers (or slants) may be necessary to create harmony with your lead line. So it depends on what you are after.
