Oh man...that is sad news. What a giant of the B3...one of my all-time heroes.
Adios, Jimmy... |

He was Mr. B3,never cared much for keyboards[EXCEPT]B3 players,When I was a young guy in the late 50's and early 60's playing rock and roll of that period, there was two things you HAD to have in your band,a tenor sax and a B3,learned to love both of them.DYKBC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. Sad to hear that, I was a fan of his. His version of Misty was my favorite version. |

Oh, man - this really is a bad news week. I'm really into jazz organ combos, what a soulful player. Nobody played the blues better than Jimmy. Used to see him occasionally in clubs after he came "back" in the 80s - he and his bands just cooked. RIP, Jimmy. You are definitely gonna be missed. |

Thanks for posting that one, Michael, that's great.
I mostly knew the earlier Bluenote stuff but now I gotta find this one. Purdie on the live King Curtis "Memphis Soul Stew" is one of my favorite drum tracks ever, but this is close! |

Thanks Ed. Gotta love the Hammond trio. Back in the 70s I would go to Baker's keyboard lounge in Detroit to see Groove Holmes, very sweet!
About a year ago, I was coming into the store I work at and I hear some sweet B-3. Dr. Lonnie Smith was visiting a buddy of his in the area and spent about an hour just playing and talking Hammond jazz. Fun time.

The B3 in the right hands has got to be one the greatest sounds ever! We had an all Jimmy Mcgriff day at the music store I work at yesterday. All the younger guys really thanked me for turning them on to him. It's too bad that sometimes it takes a loss for us to gain an awareness of greatness.
On an off-topic note...whenever I start to complain about how heavy my steel guitar is, I have to remind myself that it could be a B3. |
