If I wanted to switch from G tuning to say C6 or an E tuning , would I need two different resonator guitars because of the different string gauges needed in each tuning? I use a 35 for my 4th string so I can go to G6 without any problem, but what about the E and C6 tuning, could I use my EJ42 set for either of those tunings?

It partly depends on which C6 or E tuning you have in mind. The most frequently 6 string C6 tuning is from hi to lo (E-C-A-G-E-C). Probably the most popular guages are 16-18-24-26-32-36. I'm currently using a 20 guage 2nd string. But I think it's too heavy. Some people use a high C6 tuning. From hi to lo it is (G-E-C-A-G-E). 13-16-18-24-26-32.
There are too many possibilities with E for me to cover them all. Do you mean the old open E? Or are you looking for E7, E6, a form of E13 or E9......you get the idea. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Go to this site and input your current sizes and tuning. It will calculate the string forces. Then, change the tuning and keep the same string sizes and see what happens to the forces.
However, I don't know what makes for an excessive amount of force, or an excessive amount of variation in force from string to string.

Edward, I'm talkin about the standard open E tuning like on a 6 string guitar.
Thanks Mike for the link, I'll take a look.

I've used D'Addario EFT13 reso strings, gauged 16-56, designed for the G tuning, and they worked fine for open E (or it may possibly have been open D, same intervals but one tone down, 'cos this was on an old acoustic, not actually a resonator guitar).

For standard open E tuning a reuglar set of medium guage guitar strings should do just fine. That's what I used to use. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Thanks guys, what about the low C6 tuning? Will the EJ42 16-56 do for low C6? I noticed Cindy Cashdollar's C6 tuning she used a 10 for her first string. That must be for the high C6 ?

Yes, Cindy uses the high C6 with G on top. I would not recommend a standard G tuning set of strings for C6 tuning. .056 is WAY to heavy for the bottom C note. This could be very bad for your neck, tuners, and your eye when the string pops as you crank it up to pitch.
The standard electric gauges for C6 are:
.015
.018
.022
.024w
.030w
.036w
The gauges Edward recommended for resophonic C6 look good to me. Try those on for size and see how it feels. For open E, your 16-56 set should do just fine. Then if you want to swing, pull your second string up from B to C# (sorta like C6, but in E).
