I just traded one on my guitars for a 10 string lap steel.
... I would like to use it for backup for a few modern country tunes, if possible. Nothing fancy. Maybe even a few blues tunes if possible. i am mostly looking for a tuning that will give me optimal "straight across" chording arrangements (since there are no pedals).
Any single note leads will just be done the old fashioned way ... by moving the bar all over the neck!!
Thanks

There is the Tom Morrell 10 string tuning. From hi to lo G#-F#-E-C#-B-G#-F#-E-D-E. There is the 10 string C6 from hi to low G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F-D. I think somebdy like maybe Roy Thompson has a 10 string leavitt that you might try also. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Trying to ecide between a E13 tom Morrel tuning or a C6.
In the Tom Morrell tuning, going from low 10 string (fat string) to high 1 string (thinnest string) .... do the string gages get progressively thinner or is there a higher string before the first string. I have a pack of E9 sstrings and I would need to know which additional strings (gages) I need to buy.
The immediate advantage of trying the C6 is that I can use my C6 set as is and I am more familiar "theorywise' with the c scale, of which all the strings are in. the other advantage I see for the C6 is that the strings get much thicker giving a good bottom end.
So I am trying to decide. Its getting expensive trying and adding all these additional strings that aren't included in a regular set of strings. LOL.
Anyway, suggestions for either tuning is more than welcome. ALSO any advice on chord or harmony string manipulation and theory for either tuning would be appreciated.
Thanks

An old E13 tuning which is convenient to use:
(The traditional high-to-low, of course)
G#, F#, E, C#, B,
G#, F# E, C#, B gives you two octaves of the E9
chord - E, G#, B, F# + 13th C#
plus a host of others such as C#m, etc.....

In both the Morrell and C6 tunings the strings get progressively lighter as you go up. There are no, "re-entrant," strings.
I don't know of any instructional material for the Morrell tuning. Scotty's Music has the Jerry Byrd book as well as alot of other stuff for C6. But it's all limited almost exclusively to 6 strings. It never gets past 8. And the 8 string stuff tends to be in Jerry's C6/A7 tuning.
I've heard that Bobbe Seymore (Nashville Steel Guitar) has some material in 8 string C6 (E-C-A-G-E-E-A-F) which would be your middle 8 strings.
I've heard that Cindy Cashdollar has something out for an 8 string E13 that covers alot of Morrels tuning. Also, Scotty's Music has some Jerry Byrd tablatures in E9 which might help you along. If I think of anything else, I'll post it. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Thanks for all the responses. Life was so much easier with six strings .... Then ... I wanted more! And now that i have more i am scratching my head. LOL.
As of this moment I am thinking of a C6, and probably the main reason is the greater range from low to hi (I do like my low notes), as well as some (limited) insructional material. Its probably best to get it out of my system and then decide if i want to go to the E13.
Thank You All. Great Forum.
