I need to download the "RAID Configuration Utility" into my computer so I can use two Hard Drives. The motherboard is Intel D865PERL using Windows XP Home Edition. So, if anyone knows where to find this, Please let me know. Thank You! papasteel@charter.net

I do hope you realize that you will have to reinstall the operating system and all your apps, unless you are able to use registry hacks and workarounds. Most people don't have much luck changing a single drive system to a RAID system after the OS is already installed.

No doubt somebody else will offer suggestions to do the workarounds, but I just considered doing the same thing and aborted the idea after reading about the hassles involved.

RAID is always best setup before installing any OS.

I just want to point out that you don't need to use RAID to make use of two hard drives.

In fact, I'd stay away from software RAID if you can. I've been burned by it, and it sounds like Wiz has as well. Hardware RAID, which requires an add-on card, is great, but somewhat expensive.

Either way, Windows needs to be installed from the start with the proper RAID drivers for your setup. Certainly for software RAID, anyway.

Also, RAID that comes with motherboards (like my NVIDIA board) is still software RAID, it just uses slightly less CPU.

** If you're just trying to add storage, and not mirror or stripe your drives, then just install the second drive, make sure the BIOS sees it, and format it using Windows.

The place you'd do that is in Control Panel, under Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.

Unless you really wanted to stripe or mirror them, in which case forget what I said. But keep in mind that striping disks using software RAID is a good way to screw up your drives in stereo.

On June 11, 2008, I screwed the pooch by experimenting with software RAID conversion and it took me over 13 hours to restore my Windows OS and desktop. I will save RAID experiments for a new computer that I will probably build later this year, but, I'll never try to convert an existing operating system to RAID again.

I do make daily backups using Acronis True Image 11, to one of the SATA disks that I tried to add to a RAID 1 array. It is just as happy being an "Acronis Backup Location" disk. I restored my computer from an Acronis backup made the night before the aborted RAID conversion. However, I suffered additional consequences after restoring the image, as detailed in my blog article titled: "Disk problems after restoring an image and how I solved them."
