There's an interesting new CD called BOLLYWOOD STEEL GUITAR out on the Sublime Frequencies label. It's all Indian film music, with the wild and eclectic arrangements-- surf meets meets spy meets swing meets Indian classical and folk--that you might expect from that genre.
Steel players like S. Hazarasingh and Kazi Andiruddah from the 1960s and 70s play the melody lines with a lot of style and energy, and very vocal-sounding phrasing and tone. I've just begun digging in, but it has certainly caught my ear. |

So Michael, do you have one of the necks on that Custom tuned to the Phrygian mode for this stuff? Or you could consider adding sympathetic strings to get a slide sitar effect. The mind boggles.

Michael, I'm pretty sure I saw a picture of one of those floating off an oil terminal in the Persian Gulf. Probably tuned to some sort of Arabic mode,eh? Short on sustain, but I'll bet the volume is killer.

I have an album from Vishwa Mohan Bhatt's son Salil that's the same idea - "Super Hits - Old Melodies." It's Indian pop & movie music on steel, sort of like the Clapton steel guitar album only, Indian. I'm pretty sure the next big thing in pedal steel guitar will be some kid in India who's off in a closet right now working up ragas and Western blues/rock on an old Sho-bud... now that there's U. Shrivinas playing solidbody Indian shred mandolin and this guy on electric shred sitar, what else could possibly be coming?

That album is a trip. They definitely don't think "mash pedals A&B." Actually, I think it's all non-pedal, and mostly single string work. If you like your steel sounds wacky, this album is for you. There are a couple of Indian guys who play the steel in "classical" Indian settings, but not here. This album is all film music, which means anything goes.
