FYI: Stacy Phillips workshop in Palo Alto

Post by Brad Bechtel »

Stacy Phillips will be hosting a Dobro Workshop at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, California, on Saturday, Oct 21st from 11:00am – 2:00pm. Cost is $40.00.

Workshops are designed for all levels of players. Topics covered can be decided by the students so feel free to email Stacy at: archduke@stacyphillips.com. Stacy will teach at least one tune and will be prepared to discuss the dobro in bluegrass, blues, swing, Hawaiian, and country-folk. Specific techniques will be discussed, like fitting melodies into roll patterns, slants, & string pulls, how to "fake" tunes at jam sessions, playing in all keys - using open strings in all keys, building solos from scalar patterns, easy to apply retunings. Bring your audio recorders.

I hope I'll see you there!

Sound fun but I'm not sure I could handle a room full of Dobros all playing at once! Gotta think about this one.

I remember when I attended a Jimmy Heffernan workshop near Sacramento a few years back. He had us practicing sliding back and forth between notes. Thirty people doing it at once reminded me of the sound the seagulls made in the movie "Finding Nemo".
It should be worthwhile, even if it will be noisy at times.
