Wiz,
Is it OK now to install AVG 8.0? They keep sending a warning notice that 7.5 will run out after 5/31. AVG won't be updating 7.5 from 5/31 on, time is closing in, but I'm still leery about installing 8.0.

I received an automatic program update for my AVG 8 last night, seems to run faster now on the sites I had problems with, don't know about the other issues..

| Scan with 8.0 takes 4 hours here, vs 2 hours with v 7. V8 finds spyware and cookies unlike v7, and can save results in a file so you can enjoy reading it at your leisure. |

4 HOURS? WOW!
That's gotta hurt. Sure didn't want to hear that.
Maybe I'll go back to Avast, or look for some other program.

You can ignore the pop-up sales pitch about the may 31 deadline. It is incorrect. The company has rescinded that date, but the programmers had released the code for the pop-ups at the end of April, so almost everybody is seeing those warnings anyway. The company had to give in to pressure from its user base around the World. The official end of updates for AVG 7.5 is December 31, 2008.

Wiz, sounds like they are developing their new software for Vista, like many others. Although mickysoft is going to support XP for 4 or 5 more years, all the new software is going to be developed primarily for Vista.
"Vista Certified" or some similar slogan seems to be the norm on new software. |

I've already got enuff issues with Vista, so I think I'll wait until December with 7.5.
Is there any great reason to go with 8.0 if you don't have to? I also use Windows Defender; Spy-Bot; Registry Mechanic; and Windows Firewall. |

Chip from experience I advise you to stop using Registry Mechanic, it crashed my computer badly, had to do a complete reinstall, try CCleaner it is completely safe, also try Zone alarm instead of windows firewall> they both are free.

CCleaner's Registry cleaner is not totally safe. It flags what it thinks are orphaned file associations for deletion, when in fact they may be used by less frequently accessed programs. I always review everything it selects, then manually uncheck the ones that I suspect are necessary. The first time I ran CCleaner's Registry Cleaner it broke several applications and I had to undo the changes. Always accept the option to save a backup of the removals, just in case something breaks after running this utility.

Thanks for the input Richard. I've been using RM now for a couple of years and haven't ever had one problem.
It backs up everything before it makes a move.
I was using ZA, too, but started encountering problems with it, so Wiz suggested that the latest version of Windows Firewall was pretty good; so I've been using it, and it runs fairly smoothly.
Appreciate the help.  |
