Did Gibson ever make the Console Grande with 8 strings on the back neck and 7 on the front? There's one in the local shop set up this way and I've never seen another one like it.

Yes, they did. When it was introduced in 1939, the 7 and 8 string combination was standard, but any combination of 6, 7 or 8 strings could be ordered (according to Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars).

My very late 30's or early 40's is a D-7, with CC pups with adjustable polepieces.
