WEll I emailed these guys but no response yet.
http://gatorcase.com/productsdetail.aspx?LID=3&PID=45
I've seen a lightweight case of theirs upclose that someone had and it is awesomely made.
I'm sure they could make to size of a steel guitar....but I just can't get a response....try to get to them.

After out chat in the parking lot yesterday, I got to thinking about this as well. Here's something I pulled up on the MF site that looked interesting:

I was "surfing" around the net looking at some idea's for a gig bag not long ago and found serveral sites for some nice padded shotgun and rifle cases that looked pretty good and not to pricey too!

Thanks guys. I got an email in to Corson and to Gator to see if they can help. I am really tempted to try making my own like Steve Alcott did in the post linked above.
Thinking about just thrifting up a hockey duffle bag or something a bit smaller and making a foam insert.
Its hard for me to shell out $300 clams for a case I'm not sure is gonna fit or be proctective enough...and thats IF I can even find someone to make it.
psg gear sure is hard to come by.
edit: JIm , I was thinking a padded shotgun case would be perfect for the legs and pedal bar. Like a split case ya know? Dont think you could cram the body of a guitar into one of those tho could ya? mybae a padded bazooka case? |

I've ordered a Guardian CK-400/49 and it should arrive later today.
I'll let you know how it works out. It's 36"x14"x5" and about $25 + shipping.

Some of the one's I looked at were more on the lines of "one size fits all" and not so formed to the gun shape. Seems like there were a few that might have worked for a guitar body and then some smaller ones for legs and pedal bar.
Just do a search for "padded shotgun cases".

that was interesting. padded shotgun case $9.99.
same exact case but meant to hold a lighting tripod from one of the big online music gear suppliers $69.99.
didnt see anything that would hold a guitar body, but that shotgun case for $9.99 is definetly gonna be holding my legs, rods and pedal bar. |

As per Jay Ganz's reports I got the same thing that Roger R ordered:
this keyboard case
Jay told me that he fortified his with some cardboard & some foam and I agree that it will need some enrichment. I want to fix it up so that there is some blocking that keeps things from moving around. At 4X the price you get something much more substantial looking but with a bit of custom work I think this will work well. Hope to find the time soon. |

thats the direction I think i am heading in too Jon. could you please post again when you get the bag and tell us if it works for you?
looks a little thin for what I wanna do. check out Steve Alcotts case in the link above. Thats about what Im after. I am thinkin I will need a least an inch of high density foam around all sides of the guitar body minimum, so with a guitar body thats about 4 or 5 inches tall to begin with, Im thinkin these keyboard bags will be too shallow most of em, but would love ot hear that it works. |

That's the one - but it's 6.10 pm and is still 'Out For Delivery' according to the UPS site! It's been that way since 7.15 am!!!
Why do UPS always leave our street 'til last?
I am expecting to have to slightly reinforce this bag - maybe some foam; we'll see. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Roger, this is off topic but kinda interesting. I was talkin to a UPS driver the other day and he told me when you see on their tracking thingy that it says "out for delivery" that does not necessarily mean it is on the truck out for delivery. Apparently they dont scan em before they put em on the truck , they just assume its "out for delivery" based on where it should be after a certain amont of time after having been received at their distro hub. He said MOST of the time they are in fact "out for delivery" but its not an actual gurantee that someone scanned it and put it on the truck for delivery. I was surpised they arent scanned before being put on the truck as i thought they were scanned everytime they were touched. I'm sure your bag IS out for delivery tho and you'll have it soon |

7.20 - and it's arrived.
Don't scold me - but I can't check the actual fit yet, because my steel is set up beHIND our patio furniture, which we've brought indoors while we had some spray-crete applied to the outside surface.
It looks fine. There's some foam padding top and bottom, but I'll have to put the body in there to see how it feels. Don't forget, I'm going to be handling this myself and carrying it on to the 'plane, so it doesn't have to stand up to any rough treatment.
My only reservation is about the width - at 14" it's a bit too wide to be a snug fit, but the length and depth are about right. The 5" depth is actually a wee bit shallow, but maybe that'll take up some of the slack in the extra width.
Fingers crossed! At $25 it's a tenth of the price of a bespoke case.... _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Roger, glad you got your bag. My fingers are triple crossed it will work for you (and for me). What kind of guitar are you puttin in there? D10? SD10? S10? other? My fear was it didnt look deep enough to give good protection to the keyhead/strings/changer and allow set up of legs, etc when it was lying flat....I guess it could always be returned if it didnt fit. Lemme know how it works out. Thanks- |

Ben,
I should have been clearer, but I'd forgotten that this was YOUR thread - I started my own a few weeks back, and the two have merged in my feeble brain!
I only ever intended to put my guitar's body in this bag. I'm flying to London for a tour later this year, and I don't want to 'check' my steel. I'll put the body in this bag and carry it on. The legs, pedal bar, etc will go in my suitcase. Others have contributed and recommended a shotgun or rifle soft-bag for the other bits and pieces.
My guitar is a D10 Emmons LeGrande. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

No problem Roger...I figured it was gonna be body only , as that is my plan too. Ditto on the shotgun case for legs..I see padded shotgun cases that look perfect for that for $9.99. My goal is to just get a lightweight case that will protect the body of my guitar while I haulk it to practice, gigs, lessons, etc. I would never ever ship it, allow a bagage handler to toss it, or even tour n a van with such a case..but something has to be done for the local stuff as my back just isnt capable of lifting the hardcase with guitar in it without risking mnths of physical therapy again. My guitar is an SD10 so I guess the fourteen inch width would be even worse for me, but I'm thinking I could just get some hard foam and make inserts till it was sufficiently snug.
Its the 5" depth that concerns me. Lemme know when you get your guitar in that thing. Cheers! |

Ben
I've tried it, and I think it's going to work.
First of all, there's plenty of space in the bag. The 5" depth is no problem for my Emmons (with nine knee-levers); in fact, it's almost too big.
The actual external measurements are: 38" x 16" x 7" - it would have been better if it had been two inches less all round.
My guitar is 12" wide and the bag says it's 14". That allows lots of room, and, ideally, I'd have bought a smaller bag - if there had been one! If I intended to use it frequently, I'd find a panel of fibre-board or something similar and 'line' the lid and the bottom of the case to give it more rigidity, but mine's going to be a one-time usage - Miami to Heathrow and back again.
Now I just have to perfect a nonchalant strolling gait as I pretend that it's light as a feather, and that it's just your ordinary carry-on bag..... _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Thanks Roger. I think I'm gonna get one a give it a try. the price sure beats an unreturnable $300 custom made case
If its succesful I will post back with some pictures so others searching for a "gig bag" solution can see if it might be right for them. |

i ordered the guardian case we were talking about above. sadly, it will not work for me and I have to return it (minus the 10$ shipping fee, the $10 handling fee and whatever it costs me to ship it back to them). the guardian was too large , large enough that my plan to fill the empty space with protective hard foam wasnt feasible. It was also too narrow, narrow enough that my plan to line the top and bottomwith protective foam wasnt feasible. The sides were also floppy so it doesnt retain its shape when opened which seems like it would make loading your guitar in there a pain. I wll be curious to hear if this case works for your plane trip Roger.
so anyway, the search continues for a reasonably priced gig bag for my psg...any ideas welcome. Still no response from Corson Music or from Gator to my email inquiries. Thanks all. |
