Hi all,

I just booked myself a place at Bob Brozman's lap style workshop at the London Resonator Centre on 11 November! It will be the first time I have any sort of first hand lap steel learning experience - I really look forward to it!

Has anyone been to a lap style workshop with Bob Brozman? What can be expected?

Fred

I attended a workshop with him over here last year, but it wasn't booked as a 'lap style' workshop though.
Great fun, lasted for about 90 minutes and I guess we played our guitars for about 5 of those,- the rest was mostly about rhythm.

He's intense, funny, a little crazy and highly opinionated, and I'd recommend that you bring something to record with, because time flies by so fast that you won't know what hit you until it's over...
(he is totally cool with his workshops being recorded, he encourage students to do so).

Have fun!

Bob is a great teacher, and doesn't hold anything back. He'll be happy to show you anything from his bag of tricks.

You are in for a treat!

Bob has never done a specifically lap style workshop in the UK before, as far as I know. One thing I am pretty sure of is that he will be using low bass G tuning! I expect that he will spend a lot of time talking about rhythm, and that he will cover basic slants and harmonics in G.

I asked him a while back if he did Hawaiian workshops and he said that he thought that was better taught one to one, so I doubt that will be on the agenda. I don't know how you feel about Vintage Hawaiian music but I would recommend getting Bob's Hawaiian guitar DVD before you go to the workshop. That would be a good intro to slants and vibrato and help you to get the most out of your trip to town.
