In 1959 Paul Desmond wrote the first million-seller jazz single 'Take Five'. Take Five is also one of the first jazz standards written in an odd meter, 5/8 in this case.
Here's a transcription of Take 5, arranged for guitar. Take Five is a good song to get the feel of 5/4.
One bar of 5/4 contains 2 parts: a 2 beat part and a 3 beat part. Sometimes the 2 beat part comes first, sometimes the 3 beat part. In the case of Take Five the 3 beat part comes first:

| Someone told me recently that he had heard a 'new jazz' version of Take 5---probably some limp wiener like Kenny G----done in 4/4. That had me chuckling for quite a while. |

The solos on the original Brubeck were in 4. it's been said that the only tune trumpeter Don Ellis ever did in 4 was "Take Five." He seemed to like 11/4 and 17/4 better.

As I remember, it was a tune designed to highlight the drummer's skill. One heck of a drum solo on the original. 
Just reminiscing, I remember when the Quartet played Dallas at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium in early 60's. The group was late due to bad weather, and flew to Dallas minus most of the drum kit. My friend and I were in the front row when we heard about the trouble. Geoff West, my buddy, had what was needed, and they were back and set up in less than half-hour. This crowd was not going anywhere. Every one was patient during the brief delay.
One great night.

Really? Are you sure? I don't have it right now (in storage, grumble grumble) but I could swear that it stayed in 5 the whole time. I'm almost positive that the drum solo is in 5. Going to 4/4 for the solos is just so...unBrubeck!
Paul Desmond is one of my favorite players ever. Such a great sound. He made those Brubeck records.

| Take Five stays in 5/4 time throughout...matter of fact Dave Brubeck and Eugene Wright play the same vamp for almost the entire tune except for two "B" sections, in the first and last heads...over 5 minutes of "go park the car real far" now that's awesome! |

"Take Five" has always been a fave of mine, and I've stumbled through playing it on the "back neck". Mainly, unaccompanied. It's a hard song to do improvs on without a rhythm section. 
Paul Desmond wrote a sequel to "Take Five" called, surprisingly enough, "Take Ten". "Take Ten" is also written in the 5/4 time signature and can be found on the Paul Desmond album of the same name. This album also features Paul's "Nancy (with the laughing eyes)" and "Samba De Orfeu". Great music!
