I'm having a fine time discovering the swing thing of Joaquin Murphey via a CD that arrived from a friend, together with an inaccurate track listing. I can only identify the bands on a couple of these tunes. Could anyone help me fill in the rest?
I've Heard Your Story Before
Smile When I Speak Of Texas (T. Texas Tyler)
Peekin' Through The Keyhole
Down Along The Rio Grande
Rose Of San Antone
You Broke Your Promise
A Pair Of Blue Eyes
Lose Your Blues
Tamaritza Boogie
Missouri
Artistry In Western swing (Tex Williams)
Chickashee Chick
Ball Of Fire
I’m Through Trusting You
Last Straw
You Clobbered Me (Spade Cooley)

I've Heard Your Story Before: This is almost certainly T Texas Tyler, assuming you mean "I've Heard That Story Before".
Tamburitza Boogie is likely Tex Williams; once you recognize his deep voice, you will probably find it on some of the other songs.
Peekin' Through The Keyhole: Is this "Peepin' Through the Keyhole Watching Jole Blon"???? That song was done by a lot of bands, including Sheb Wooley. Don't think it is Joaquin with Sheb.
Some of the other songs are probably Deuce Spriggens or Smokey Rogers doing the singing with Tex Williams band, but offhand I don't recognize those titles. If they are mediocre sound quality, they are likely from one of the Tex Williams live performance CDs.

Ha, I have that same collection on a tape, I think it might have been originally put together by Jeremy Wakefield. I don't have the tape here at my desk, so I'm not much of a help right now. I'll post them when I get home unless Herb Steiner or somebody else gets here before me |

Here are some likely suspects:
Down along the Rio Grande: The Plainsmen, Coast 227, from 1946
That's the last straw: Ozie Waters and the Plainsmen, Coast 237, from 1946
Missouri: Ozie Waters and the Plainsmen, Coast 226, from 1946
Peekin', Peekin', Peekin' (The keyhole song), Deuce Spriggens, Coast 267, from 1947
Blue, Blue Eyes: The Plainsmen, Coast 240, from 1946

And the No Peddlers posse comes through! Thank you all. Mitch, that’s a big help, much appreciated. Jussi, if you can find that tape, that would be wonderful. Thomas... check your email.

I have Lose Your Blues\Tamaritza Boogie on a Jasmine comp CD- it's JM with Smokey Rogers.
I'd be interested in a copy if anyone manages to dupe a bunch.

Rick, I did find it, here you go:
T. Texas Tyler:
- I've Heard Your Story Before
- Smile When You Speak Of Texas
Deuce Spriggins:
- Peekin' Peekin' Peekin'
The Plainsmen:
- Along The Rio Grande
- New San Antonio Rose
Tex Williams:
- You Broke YOur Promise
- Pair Of Blue Eyes
Smokey Rogers:
- Lose Your Blues
- Tamburidza Boogie
- Ball Of Fire
- Chickashay Gal
Ozie Waters:
- Missouri
- Baby That's The Last Straw
Jimmie Widener:
- I'm All Thru' Trusting You
The titles might be somewhat different from the original 78 labels, like Mitch already posted, but we're close enough I guess. And eat your heart out, my tape has lots more and there's a "volume 2" too!!!

Yep, I've got that big collection, too. I have to say, though, that my favorite Joaquin is not represented on it--Roy Rogers' "Kid With A Rip In His Pants". |

I belive this is a recording someone put together..... but I would love a copy as well. Hint Hint (anybody) I don't have any of these Joaquin cuts.
He is my hero for sure.

What Todd said! Somebody had a great idea in putting this collection together, and anybody who was gracious enough to make it available would have my undying gratitude and some bucks for their trouble. This is brilliant music, and I'll just shut up now. |

If I remember correctly, it is indeed the Wakefield JM comp. I failed to get back to him when he returned from a tour years ago to get a copy of it and didn't want to bother someone that busy, so it's great to see it mentioned on the SGForum and hope someone can do us all a big favor by putting the whole thing together and letting us have an early Christmas.
Thanx Mike, for putting the listing up.
Glad to see Sweet Georgia Brown, one of Murph's hottest, on it.
I finally got an original 45 of it off the 'bay once only to have it arrive in 2 pieces.
After all these years, Joaquin is still the gold standard for West coast/swing steel.[This message was edited by Ron Whitfield on 11 August 2006 at 11:46 PM.] |

I'd gladly do it but unfortunately I don't have the equipment ( cd burner or even a double tape deck ). But meanwhile I can recommend a Spade Cooley cd "and his Western Dance Gang" and Tex Williams "On The Air" both on British Country Routes label. Both cd's have over 20 tracks of radio brodcasted material and almost evry song features a lengthy JM solo. These cd's should be fairly easy to get online. |
