Does anyone play this tune in C6 tuning? I know I've seen it offered in a D9 tuning but would sure like to find it in C6. I've been in my Hawaiian mode lately and can't get this tune out of my head. |

Andy,
Just play it in C6 using the D-9 Tab but omit the F# on the 4th string.
It will still come out nicely.
Aloha,
Don |

The "Moon of Manakoora" was the featured song in the old black and white movie, "The Hurricane" which starred Dorothy Lamour and Jon Hall. The movie was produced again about 20 years ago and filmed in Bora Bora by producer Dino Delorentis (sp ?). It paled to the original. My wife and I were in Bora Bora during the production of the second "The Hurricane".
The finale 'hurricane' scene in the original black and white movie was superbly done. For those who might be wondering, you can search the entire South Pacific looking for the tropical island of Manakoora but you won't find it...a beautiful song of a mythical island.

It works great on the C6/A9 "Murph" tuning also. |

When I was in Singapore with Kay Das,
we did a recording of this.
He played a lapsteel, I'm not sure which tuning,
and I took a solo on Kay's MSA classic C6 PSG.
I like how the tune worked for C6.
It would have been fine without pedals too. |

George, I'm familiar with the movie of which you speak and my wife and I were talking tonight about how long it's been since we've seen it. It's great! [This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 29 July 2006 at 01:25 AM.] |

OK Gerald, thanks for asking.....
Two necks with C6/E13 on one and A6/B11 on the other using pedals to change the tunings. Just the "open" tuning and one other on each neck, Played similarly to the way Mike Scott uses his Multi-Kord. (Pedals to change tuning NOT to create notes.) |

Correct me if I am wrong, but one of the prettiest versions of this song ever recorded was played by Johnny Pineapple about 50 years or so ago. Jack deToro was the steel player and his touch, tone and expression was awesome.

Bas, pretty cool version.
I am sort of used to Alfred Apaka's singing,
but this is a nice version too.
Nice playing from y'all. |

Andy, I hope you don't mind me posting this .. It's NOT C6th but you can easily adapt it by dropping all the notes by one string, and the chords by an appropriate amount down.

Bas, 7 bars into the second line, I would add a second bar of C, and again later when it comes around again later in the tune. |

Andy, There is a very simple C6th arrangement played by Jerry Byrd in the key of D.
Not well known, perhaps, because it is part of a Homer and Jethro recording.
Title of the album is "Homer and Jethro Fracture Frank Loesser."

"Keoki"- I remember seeing the original show with Dorothy Lamour. (I think I was in love with her).LOL.
I loved Hawaiian music, but this was before I heard of Alvino Rey. Then I moved on to a D8 and then the pedal guitar.
I played the "Moon of Manakoora" way back in the early, early days. I like to play it both ways, without pedals and then with pedals. On 6string lap steel, I used A6. On the pedal guitar I use E6. I recorded it on Cassette tape and it's somewhere in my music room. Beautiful song....al
(edited to say, I used A6 but dropped the 3rd string A to G# and acually played it in C# Minor.)

the version that david donald refers to has three interpretations on steel on the cut: myself on C6, then David on pedal steel and then myself on B11. it is a jazzed up version and may not be to the liking of the traditionalists....i do not have my recording studio back in shape and that particular CD up yet so cannot upload it, but david may wish to do so, he has a copy of the CD.

Baz, that tab worked out great for me. I used BIAB for my rhythm and now have something to practice with.
Al, Kay and Donald, I'd love to hear your versions of this great tune if any of you can find it to post on here. BTW, if anyone can use a Band in a box file for this tune I used Basil's mp3 to pattern my rhythm track. Email me.[This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 29 July 2006 at 11:08 PM.] |

Andy,
Sure, I have asked David Donald if he could upload as my gear is still on the floor here in irvine with unconnected wires all over.
BTW, the lead sequence was : Lap(B11)- Jazz Mandolin - Jazz Guitar - Pedal(C6) - Lap(C6). Credit goes to David Donald for the excellent jazz mandolin/guitar interludes and the pedal steel.
