Just a quick Hi from a new member and a new player! I've been lurking for awhile, but as of yesterday I'm the proud owner of a Gibson BR-9 (that I promptly broke a string on trying to tune, so you can see I'll need all the help I can get) and it seemed time to jump in. I've played the bluegrass fiddle for several years, but my heart lies with country music and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make the fiddle twang like the steel guitar.

Welcome!!!! You are in a great place!!! Don't feel to bad I also broke a string the first time I tuned my dobro, it was my first steel.

THANKS! I should have checked the Forum BEFORE I tried to tune it, as I already learned a lot about tuning that I didn't know this time yesterday. I'm rationalizing that it no doubt needed no strings anyway...

Thanks everybody! Everyone on this forum seems so welcome and supportive. I have been on Brad's Page of Steel, too - I've been referring to it often.
Yes, Pacific is Mel Bay's home town! The publishing house is here, my husband has been there.
send good thoughts my way today as I attempt to replace my strings.

Welcome Dierdre,from Alabama,I have always had a lot of respect for fiddle players,Only instrument I could not at least get a tune out of,If you can play that little monster,you will have NO problem playing your lap steel,happy picking.DYKBC.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Charles! I'll have to get that muscle memory going for my right hand - what a change from bowing! And if I could keep my finger picks from flying off . . . 
I agree Mark - I think my little BR-9 sounds great! Of course I love it since it's my first, but I really think it sounds good. I was on a limited budget, but I liked the look of it anyway and besides, I am a student!
