Well it took me a few hours to learn the basics of Internet Video delivery. Here it is.
Here are some hand-held shaky-camera videos I recorded with my digital camera at this weekend's Aloha International Steel Guitar Club's convention in Winchester, Indiana.
I'm fond of all the players I recorded but I have a special place in my heart for Mike Scott and his musical talents and friendship.
Mike was very encouraging and helpful to me when I first became part of the Hawaiian music community.
This past weekend I convinced Mike to join the Steel Guitar Forum. He will be a wonderful asset to this group. He is extremely knowledgable about steel guitar and Hawaiian recordings. He has one of the world's largest collections of Hawaiian recordings. Mike just celebrated his 80th birthday last month! Listen to that tone he gets out of his frypan.
Kay Koster is a perenial favorite at the conventions. She's doing quite well for 80+ years (as my uncle always said, "you should be doing so well").
Bobby Ingano, Paul Kim, Doug Smith, Don Fulmer, Andy Barlow, Don Woods, Frank Brandenburg, Duke Ching. Listen, look and learn!
Same type of music at the HSGA Joliet convention in October!
Moonlight In Waikiki - Mike Scott
The Moon Of Manakoorah - Mike Scott
Blue Hawaiian Moonlight - Bobby Ingano
Yellow Roses - Bobby Ingano
Moana Loa Medley - Paul Kim
Patches - Doug Smith
Rope Twirling - Doug Smith
Little Brown Gal - Duke Ching
The One Rose - Don Fulmer
Akaka Falls - Don Fulmer/Frank Brandenburg
Little Hula Heaven - Don Woods
On The Beach At Waikiki - Kay Koster
Walmart Door Sign Joke - Kay Koster
Aloha.

Thanks, Gerald. This should be required viewing for anyone interested in Hawaiian steel guitar.
It plays back just fine on my Macintosh using the QuickTime player and Windows extensions.

Thanks Brad, I agree, these should be required viewing. I am also planning on introducing a new video area to the HSGA website. Give me some time for this one.
On this forum we spend countless hours and write thousands of lines of text on topics like slanting, harmonics, bar placement etc.
These videos cut to the chase. Anyone with a little bit of skill can learn these techniques quickly by watching the pros in action.

Thanks Gerald! You hit the nail on the head re: videos being a great way to learn (hence my "Seeing is Believing" post).
However, not everyone (eg. me) can view the .wmv format from HGSA (the new intel-based macs don't have a compatible plug-in). Would you consider uploading them to YouTube? They handle a variety of incoming formats and allow pretty much anyone to be able to view (regardless of PC type browser, plug-in etc.) |

Gerald,
Thanks so much for posting these. Great stuff and nice variety.
You were fortunate to have Mike Scott welcome you into the Hawaiian music community and I look forward to having him participate in the Forum.
Ain't this Forum grand? |

Congrats Gerald, you got the hang of the Video format pretty quickly.
The clips are great and I can view them no problem on my G5 (I am using the Windows Media Player)
Just so you know that WMP works on a mac !!
We need more of these insights to the conventions. Not all of us can get to them !!

Not to hi-jack the post but:
There will be people who will be unable to see these videos as posted (such as myself). (Thanks for the "tech support" Baz, but your set up does not match my configuration — a post-G5 intel based Mac.)
I can understand Gerald posting the on HSGA and I think they make a great addition to the work posted their.
But I would suggest that people posting video consider using YouTube, as it will ensure a wider audience. |

Gerald mentioned to me at Winchester that he intended to post some videos on the web as soon as he could figure out how to do it. In his typical fashion, he got right on it and made it happen. The videos do indeed tell the story of what goes on at these conventions.
You can see the serious and playful attitudes of the musicians, the camaraderie, and how the bar work relates to the sounds.
Thank you Gerald. Too bad we didn't get a video of you, too. Perhaps at Joliet... |

Hi Patrick,
I understand your position regarding You Tube. But I really don't want to turn these loose on the world in an open format.
If the world wants to see these videos they should come to the HSGA website and spend some time there. We might as well get some advertising out of this free service.
The goal is too educate and spread the word about the Hawaiian Steel Guitar, the HSGA and Aloha International. You Tube will not accomplish that goal. Thoughts?
Perhaps some Forumite MAC owners can help Patrick?

Not sure I agree with you there,- wouldn't the best way to "spread the word" be to actually make these videos available on sites that's not limited to the usual "fan base"?
The videos already offer some information, and if the You Tube posts also include links to HSGA, they it may draw people to the site who otherwise wouldn't have been aware of it.
Just a thought...

I was able to download the older version of the Windows Media Player for Macintosh from Microsoft's Mactopia web site and the movies played just fine on an Intel-based Macintosh (iMac). I would suggest using that player on your Mac until Microsoft releases an update to support the Intel-based Macintoshes.

The recordings actually sound like older recordings. Maybe it's the low tech recording done on a camcorder(?). For whatever reason, to me it sounds better than it would if it were crystal clear. Mike Scott's playing, tone, mixed with the sound quality sounds like something straight from a Cumquat release. I like it when all the instruments are recorded at once. Very nice! Watching these are a great inspiration. Thanks for posting them Gerald. |

Hi Gerald,
Thanks for the thoughtful reply.
(I am able to solve the access issue as I am in the business of putting content on the internet.)
Regarding You Tube and promoting HSGA and Aloha International, and the instrument in general: I think that You Tube has the
opportunity to reach a wider audience and also through keywords and other comments, to even drive traffic back to the HGSA site. But, it's your content and your call, which I respect.
I AM truly interested in how video can enhance the learning experience and adoption of the steel guitar. My personla experience has been that after the ear, the eyes become a key to learning how to play...and that is in the form of watching, as opposed to reading TAB.
We have an incredible opportunity to share the music and the instrument through the video on the internet. I am jst propsoing that we think of what will make it most useful, such as:
- easiest format for access
- best resolution at workable streaming/download speeds
-best way/angle to shoot and record so we can see technique...etc. |

Gerald, first of all, a big Mahalo for your efforts to get these videos formatted and available to us; some wonderful performances there. They really aren't good teaching vehicles per se because most are low angle shot and you really need birds-eye-view angles and CUs to learn this content. That really doesn't matter to me; it's good to hear 'em. I agree with Steinar's points re YouTube however it remains to be seen if YouTube will be here in a year or two. Remember Napster? |
