Looking for opinions/thoughts on this one- has anyone tried this and stuck to it awhile? I'd like something Jazzy and kind of unique for a second neck of a d8 to pair with a melody tuning like a 6th tuning. From top to bottom I think its:
1.E
2.C#
3.G#
4.E
5.Bb
6.F#
7.D#(high string, 1/2 below the first)
8.F#(also high, whole step below)
Looks pretty fun. You could also quickly tune it to an E13 if you wanted. |

Where'd you find that one, Jon?
I'll have to check my tunings page and see if I have that.
If Speedy used it, it must be fun. |

Hey Ron-
I found it in several places on the net, I think Scottys page and forumite Rick Alexanders tunings page. On Ricks page, he states that Speedy got it from Herb Remington.
I also heard he had a pedal attached to this neck to change it to E13...thats just hearsay though.
Either way, looks to be some cool inversions on there. Those high strings on the bottom are kinda neat, ala Joaquin...might take awhile to get used to though. |

Those chromatic strings on the bottom were later moved to the top by players like Buddy Emmons. These are the same as the chromatic strings on an E9 pedal steel. Because of the thickness of strings 5 and 6, it can be a little difficult to get a nice clear sound from 7 and 8 unless your nut has been cut specifically for it.
I have played around with this tuning before. If you only have 1 or 2 necks, it's probably not the greatest choice. If you have a third neck, it's a nice addition. Takes a lot of time to get comfortable with the chromatic strings. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

The bottom neck on my Bigsby had the nut setup and tuning this way. |

Speedy, used that tuning on the Tennessee Ernie/Kay Starr hit, Ill never be free.
He told me his work on that recording, earned him his Capitol recording contract as an artist.
He did indeed get the tuning from Herb, who may be its originator?.
Last time I was at Billy Tonnesson's house he still had that tuning on his beautiful T8.
Its a weird one, I could never get my head around it.
I remember JW, having it on his Bigsby, and playing a great version of Body and Soul.

BTW, Mike there is a trick Herb showed me, for the nut.
You take the little brass ball ends from two old strings, set them on the nut and thread strings 7 and 8 through them.
Keep them centered as you tune up, they end up being level with the wound strings. |

Thanks for all the great replies guys, some good info.
Mike, I know what you mean about the chromatic/pedal type strings, as i've been 'shedding on an e9 pedal steel lately(oh the humanity ) for an upcoming project. I'm starting to get a real affinity for that maj 7th d# string right under the bar.
Lee, thats a great tip RE the nut. I may have to start looking for a triple neck. ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Lee, that is a very cool suggestion. Thanks for sharing it. I'm not sure I would ever go with the chromatic strings on the bottom, but if I ever did.... _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
