I'm driving up to tour the Martin guitar factory and museum. Years ago I did Gibson in Memphis and that was great. Some lady was on Antique Roadshow with a Martin and it was worth $10K. She didn't even have a case. It was the one right before electric came out, L something model.

The museum and lounge were recently remodeled and while some of the old charm is lost the museum is greatly improved. If you get there before 1:00 take the tour. You never know who will host it. Sometimes Chris Martin even does it. Over the years I've watched many changes in the way the guitars are built (no drawknives shaping the necks any longer...) but it's still great to see. |

It definitely was worth the drive. What a cool place. They used to make banjos under the Vega name. I saw a guy working on a $100K guitar almost finished.

One of my students has a new Martin Uke...piece of junk in my opinion as it was made in Mexico! I didn't know that Martin Ukes were being made in Mexico. Certainly nowhere near the high quality of tone Martin has been known for during the years.

They also made banjos with the Martin name.
I believe they bought Boston based Vega in the 70s, transfered production to Nazareth, and tried to phase out the name.
Mine is a 5-String resonator banjo, no logo on the headstock, except for the Star inlay that is associated with Vega. Inside the wooden rim is a label that says "C.F.Martin Nazareth Pa." and the serial number.
Don't tell b0b. |
