For the E9 tuning, 3x5: I'm wondering if anyone is lowering their string 10 low B to an A with pedal C? I'd like to be able to get down to a low A, but I don't want to add a pedal or lever. It seems like lever C might be a good place to add this change. Is anyone doing this? Any problems with putting it on the C pedal? Any input on this idea is greatly appreciated. BTW, I play "Emmons" set-up and lower my B's to Bb's with my vertical ever.

FWIW, I've had it on the C pedal since the late '70's . . . Ron Elliot gave me the idea, he had it on his orange Marrs S-10.
Over the years I've sat behind several other steels that had it in other locations, but for me, the C pedal is the best place.
Stiffens up the pedal action a tad but I can live with that.
Dunno just where you are in SoCal, but if ya need help Jim Palenscar's got a great shop in Oceanside.

Cliff,
I also like the low B down to an A.
I have two Carters, a 3 & 5 and a 4 & 5.
On both of them, here's what I have on my vertical knee lever:
5th string lower a 1/2 step to Bb
10th string lower a full step to A
Obviously, I don't play them both at the same time whenever engaging the lever.
This particular setup works fine for me.

Hey guys,
thanks for the good info. So, Russ, it sounds like it works pretty good for you, that's good to hear. I do know Jim in Oceanside, he's a great guy and wonderful craftsman/tech. Mark, that's a cool change for the LVL, I think I'll go ahead and try that first as I can just readjust the pull that's already there, it will give me a chance to play with the low A, then perhaps try it on the C pedal.

You've probably thought this out, but if you have the 9th string lowering by a half-tone, that change works 'hand-in-hand' with lowering the 10th.
With lowering the 9th, you'll have an octave of Major Scale notes between the 10th string lowered and the 6th string raised (B pedal).

Cliff,
for the past two years I've been lowering 10 from B to A on my A pedal, and rasing it to C# on my C pedal. I love it and wouldn't change back. Lowering to A without raising 4 to F# gives me a big fat root note of an A major chord with pedals A and B down and 9 lowered to C#. Also makes for a beautiful A major seventh chord.
I still like the traditional effect of raising 10 to C# to go from a I to a IV chord, using the 10-8-6 grip (a very different effect than simply grabbing the C# on string 9), so I put the 10th string raise over on the C pedal. That does, however, make the C pedal pretty stiff, which I don't like, but it's just the price of doing business, I guess.

We see this change (low B - A on the C pedal) a lot on guitars we set up for Al Brisco's customers in Canada. Al uses this change and I don't think he would like to be without it. |

Years ago when I lived in SoCal a friend of mine who I worked with on occasion named James O'Rafferty had this change on his A pedal. What he did on his basic tuning was tune his 9th string to C# and had a raise to D on a knee lever. His A pedal raised the 5th string B to C# and lowered the 10th string B to A. With the 9th string already tuned to C#, when he'd push the A & B pedals that A6th would be right there. I tune my 9th. strtng to C# open, lever to D. Works will on the B6th.side (lower E's to Eb)gives you that root note to the 2nd. note ,that many C6th. players would like.C to D. I tune U12,but 12th. string is E. I do have the 5,6,7 pedal changes U12 but have then set on pedals 4,5,6. . Pedal 4 is set up like pedal 7,pedal 5 like 6,pedal,and my pedal 6 like pedal 5. Just changed around. Joe

Did anybody ever try lowering the 10th string, B to A and the 9th string D ot C# with the C pedal, thereby getting a nice A6th on strings 10, 9, 8 and 7...on string 6 you would have G# for a maj7th? |

Since I have an extra LKL on my Derby, I Lower #10 (1-tone) [B] to [A] on my RKR along with #2 (1-tone) [D#] to [C#] and #9 (½-tone) [D] to [C#]. Then, I only Raise #5 (1-tone) [B] to [C#] on the (A)-Pedal. And finally, I really haven't missed my #10 [B] to [C#], but; I have the Raise-Change on my extra LKL, just for when I absolutely need it!

I haven't played set up like this for an extended period of time, but; so far, with the time I've spent on it; it seems to be working out quite satisfactorily! I discovered that I don't really need to Raise #10 very often at all! Wow!
I put the 10 string lower B to A on the A pedal,
put the 9th string to C# and the C# to D on a lever
with my 7th string F# to G
Wow - the whole bottom of the guitar has opened up for me. 8 strings cords!

Cliff.....I have been using a B on my 9th, raising it to C# with the C pedal or my RKR. My A pedal lowers it to A. I use a low E on my 10th that I lower to C# with my F lever....Full chords and easy Travis pickin when you want it!. Extended E9th...Larry |
