Anyone using one of these? Yes, I am considering another workstation which is more PC friendly for data transfer and song data archive. ( fat32 format )

I WANT to stay in the Workstation domain.

4 simple questions..

1) Reliable/robust ?

2) Can you save each song and transfer the entire song data file to PC for archive and then recall it for use later on ?

3) How many effects can be used at one time/track ? I believe there are 4 effects processors.

4) 2488 or 2488MKII thoughts ..

thanks

tp

ps, yes I know the benefits of PC recording, I also have Cubase and a 2x Tascam Analog/Midi Interface which I also use now and then.

I'm happy with my 2488.
I don't think there's a better machine in the price range.

I don't have much time now to type a lot.
Check the 2488 forum at http://tascamforums.com

Four Quick answers:
1. Yes
2. Yes, but it involves a few steps. (USB MOde)
3. Not sure. Always had enough.
4. I never had an MK. The older 2488 is fine. I installed a larger HD. (easy task)

Tony,

I had a Tascam 4 track cassette when they first came out, around 1982 or 83. I had to wait about 4 months to get it, and I was calling almost every day. It was the cat's meow at the time. Then I traded up to an 688 midi studio. Both of these were good, but you had to use outboard effects, and the cassette format didn't have really enough head room to get good bass sounds. Then I went to Roland 1680, then 1880, then finally 2480, which is where I'm at now. If I had known Tascam was coming out with the 2488, I would have held out and got it because it was less money than the Roland. I looked hard at the Yamaha and the Akia, but I got the Roland 2480. I've been happy with it, but I realize that the "all in one" studios are probably on the way out in favor of the computer based recording equipment. For now, I think I'll stick with the Roland because I'm pretty familar with it.

Bottom line, I think Tascam is very good equipment and for the kind of music we're doing, it's got plenty enough tracks and good effects too.

You might want to check out the www.vsplanet.com They ave a lot of comparisons of the different equipment. Do a search.

Gentleman and ladies, I am very familiar with Tascam , I have owned several through the years including the very first cassette 4 track 144 , which I paid right around $1000 for when it was introduced!

My questions are specific to the 2488 or 2488MKII and not related to the brand, there are a few user functions which I am not clear about and are very important as I look to get yet another unit.

I have downloaded and read the user manuals and they mention the items in question but are not specifically clear.

The current workstation I use is a Yamaha AW2816 which is a great unit, no performance or user issues , very powerful, BUT, it does not have a fat32 HD partition so data cannot be transferred back and fourth with a PC .

Many thanks for the comments.

Tony,

I have the 2488MKII.

I'm not that savvy with this equipment but I chose it on a lot of research I had done. It works as advertised.

I did get a lot of great help from Joey Ace.

Jim, thanks for the note. I have no doubt that the unit is excellent but there are few functions that I am looking for which are very important.

It appears that all of my questions have been answered on the POSITIVE side so I will probably pull the trigger on one of these soon. Now it's on to the PRICE research Smile
