A friend showed me a Rickenbacker Electro, patent # N0209917 with "Los Angeles" on the name plate beneath the brand and model name. His wife bought it for him several years ago and he never learned to play it. Consequenly it has been in the case for more than 20 years. When he took it out of the case I couldn't find one scratch or mark on the black body or the metal top. I told him that I thought he has a 6-string lap steel with considerable value. Can you Rick folks give him an idea of its worth and age?

Sounds like it could be a prewar Rickenbacker B6, but it's hard to tell without a picture or better description. A good guesstimate if it is such an instrument is over $1000. Contact Scotty's Music in St. Louis and see if they can identify it better over the phone (unless you can post or send me a picture).

Take a pix of the guitar, post it here.

You'll have all the info you want about the guitar in less than five minutes.

Brad,it looks like the model B on your web page and like the one you are seen playing there. I will make a photo and send it to you to post, since I don't have a web site. Thanks.

The Bakelites that have been referred to appear to have white plastic on the top. The one I am referring to has chrome metal parts on the top. Does that tell you guys anything about model it is?

As you said before, Fred, it sounds like a Model B. Without photos, it's almost impossible to tell. If you can find a copy of Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars, he does a good job of describing what such an instrument looks like.

Does it look like the picture below...or are there 2 knobs on the lower treble bout side (mounted below the knob on the right in this pic)? Or is there only 1 knob? Knowing which can get the year down pretty close.

Email me your pics and I will size and post them here ...if you wish.

Aloha,
DT~

This Rick turns out to be a Rick model B-6 dated 1937/38. There is one just like it on ebay. Could the Rick company have gone to plastic plates after the war started in 1941, because of the scarcity of metal at that time?
