I got my copy of Ray's new CD, "Scratchin' The Surface", a few days ago. I knew Ray was a great singer, but he out did himself on this album. You really need to hear what John Hughey played on this CD. I understand this may have been John's last session, and his playing is phenomenal. It's a given, we steel players are accused of only hearing the steel, but each musician contributed so much to this project.I'm equally impressed with the quality sound achieved in Mike Headrick's studio. The mix is one of the best. This CD is a must!

Hey Shoe,
I couldn't agree more. This is a terrific CD by Ray, and Poppa John is just tremendous throughout it. It's obvious that Ray just couldn't get enough John Hughey on this CD, he just let him play and play. A great disc of excellent country music. Highly recommended, three thumbs up (I borrowed one...)

Guys I certainly am glad that you appreciate the CD. I had a wonderful time recording it and remember all the good times each time I hear it again. John was just his usual self, great tone, innovative and smooth. My good buddies Al Bruno and Mike Headrick kept me on the right track.
I'll have some at the Dallas show.
Thanks Shoe and Jimbeaux!!

I Don't See how it could have been better in any respect.

I've known Ray Since 1967 when we were a couple of squids in the navy.

The Sum of all parts of this Cd make it one of the best you will find these days

Ray, I would like to get one of your CD's. I may be at the Dallas convention, but I 'm not for sure yet ( I'm in the middle of moving to Tennessee ). John was my hero. I got to talk to him and Mike Siler at " Legends Corner " 4 days before he passed away. I'm 55 yrs. old, but I don't mind saying I cryed when I found out. Can't wait to hear you sing. How can I get one of your CD'S ?

I have intended to start a thread on this CD since I picked it from Ray in Phoenix. Nice selection of classic country tunes well rendered by Ray. The entire band shines but, as has been mentioned here, John's playing as fine as he has ever played IMO.

Oh, and Ray was a heck of nice fellow too!

I must say that first I knew this CD would be great before I even heard it, because of the talents of all the people on it. Ray Harrison has become one of my favorite singers and of course all the musicians were some of the best. John Hughey was one of my best buddies in the steel guitar community as we have jammed together many times over the years, but his playing on this CD is some of the finest I have ever heard him do. Of course, my bass player buddy, Ben Brogdon has worked on many of my albums and is my favorite bass player too. Mike Headrick and I have been friends since the sixties and have played together in bands together years ago, so I know first hand of his ability in the studio. I have recorded several of my albums and instruction courses in his studio, primarily because of the ear that Mike has in the studio and I know that is the most important thing when recording to have an engineer who has an ear. Anyhow, I listened to this great CD all the way home from Dallas and I honestly can't begin to tell you how great it is, so if you don't have one, get in touch with Ray and get a copy. For what it's worth, I have about a dozen CDs I keep in my car that I listen to and this one is in that group.
