Kay is making us all think about the warm weather just down the road (please....)

Here's Kay:

A native of Orange County where the surf guitar sound was born, as I now am, I thought these two contributions on steel guitar might be topical. Surf guitarists are noted for extensive use of the "wet" spring reverb sound and use of the tremelo arm on their guitar to bend the pitch of notes, an effect that can be effortlessly made on steel guitar. Tube amplification, often through a Fender amplifier, was standard to achieve the Surf sound and I use a Fender Hotrod. The guitar most associated with the surf sound was the Stratocaster. I have used my custom version of the strat for these recordings.

Both tunes were made famous by Hank Marvin and the Shadows.

(1) "Cosy2008" is a re-recording of a track from my CD " Sweet and Gentle" of a few years ago. Played on the Steelocaster A6th tuning, key of A.

(2) " Midnight" is a cousin to the more famous " Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johnny , also recorded by numerous others. Played on the Sttelocaster A6th tuning, key of C.

"Steelocaster" Steel Guitar and Keyboards: Kay Das
Rhythm and Bass Guitars: Gary Taylor and Trevor Spencer.

My friend Abel, a very accomplished "surf guitarist", who lives not a million miles away from me, has recently got bitten by the steel guitar bug. Yours truly has confessed to the crime. Smile

Abel rushed out, bought a lap steel guitar and within two hours of study and minimal guidance recorded this tune, " Teardrops", which was the B side of Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk"...

So steel guitar is not so difficult after all....!? Seems that he had a lot of fun and notice that he even got some slants in ! Smile

Congratulations to Abel on joining the magical world of steel guitar!

Go Abel, go !

I think he has a "secret studio" someplace where he has been practicing. Surprised

Or another possible explanation - Kay Das is playing and Abel is doing "steel synchronization" Shocked

On the other hand, "surf" guitar playing can be generalized to steel guitar playing! Whoa!

I enjoyed it!

Aloha, Smile
