I just bought a Regal cast metal lap steel on Ebay. It's obviously from the 30's. I've only seen one or two of these over the years, so they're pretty rare. I can't find any good info on this steel. Anybody have any info aboutit?

Richard, I recall a couple of previous threads about these, but can't seem to find them using "Search."

I recently saw this one that's for sale in Australia. (IMHO, it's a "Regal National Conservatory;" I believe that all National-branded electric lap steels were made by Valco. But I've never seen anything that positively identifies one of these.)

Richard.....I have had 3 of these pass through my hands over the years. Two of the 3 were labeled Paramount Conservatory. The pick up is the standard early Regal twin blade design also found on some Recording King steels built for Montgomery Ward. Kinda weird compared to the other metal body steels since it uses an adjustable bridge not to mention the pancake style body with just a circular wooden back plate. I was never really impressed with the tone but it is certainly a very cool looking steel. Seems to be another Chicago music house model that followed the initial metal body releases by Rick, Gibson, National Valco, Harmony, etc.

" a single twin blade pickup"????
Were there twin coils too? How was it wired? Humbucking like that early Vega model? Hmmm???
