Oh yeah, Star Route show, 1964 host Red Barry, house band was Gene Davis & The Star Routers (seen briefly at the start), this was the episode that focused on Wills, that's Bob with Glen for sure.
(I can't recall why I think it's '64 when most sources say '63, but I'm sure I saw something in a few clips that gave it away.)
Someone on the page suggested that it's Glen Campbell with the Green River Boys ie Dale Fitzsimmons (fiddle) and Carl Tanberg (guitar) who recorded Big Bluegrass Special LP with Glen on Capitol in 1962, but it's definately Bobby Durham on the acoustic. Bobby can also be seen sitting with the Davis band on the same acoustic when Red does the intro. (so much for continuity) |

Jason, my son! I never thought I'd have to correct you about country music !!
The host of that show was western actor Rod Cameron, not Donald "Red" Barry. I used to watch the show religiously.
You got Bobby Durham correctly, though. The fiddler looks like Norm Whistler, but I could be wrong about that one. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Herb,
Not to derail this thread, but take a look at Bob Wills "Standing On Top Of The World" on You-Tube. The steel player is missing parts of fingers on his left hand but he does pick well. Any Idea who this is? Regards, Jay Thompson |

It's Bobby Koefer. He's got all the fingers on his left hand, he's just holding the bar "wrong." It's a flat bar that was in use back in the midieval ages of steel playing. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Thanks Herb,
Maybe he is holding it right and I have been holding the bar wrong all these years. He is another one that does not have to look at the fret board. Regards, Jay Thompson |

Well, I just lost a massive reply.. I should learn to copy my post before I hit submit.
Star Route.. yes Herb you're right it's Rod Cameron, I think I saw Red in that spaghetti western Shalako the other night, must have been on my mind.
Each episode from the 1964 syndicated series (some 36 episodes, filmed in Hollywood and Canada, with footage of the stars homes, no matter where they lived) had a main artist as the theme.
Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson, Roger Miller, Hank Thompson, Bob Wills, George Morgan, Skeeter Davis, etc.
The house band was Gene Davis & the Star Routers, featured acts were Glen Campbell and the Collins Kids, and backing vox was either supplied by the Jack Halloran Singers or Randy Van Horne and The Star Route Singers.
You can see footage from the show on youtube, there's Roger Miller, Wanda Jackson, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell and Bob Wills portions of the show all over the place, most of them have been posted by folks who don't know the source, so you have to look a little.
You can however, quite easily view a heap from the Star Route Salute To Roger Miller here:

Look for Lee Hazelwood in a silent appearance.
cheers
