Recently, I sent the chassis from my old Evans out to Ed Buffington, at Evans Custom Amplifiers. I wanted him to go over it and change out any parts that needed changing and bring everything back to the original specs of the amp. Over the years, the amp had lost some of its "fidelity" and was getting a bit too "hissy". It just didn't have the same wonderful sound that I remembered it having.

After receiving it, Ed called me from his home, on a Sunday afternoon. We had a great visit. He said the amp was built with very high-end (did he say film?) capacitors that will probably never need replacing.

He went through the whole chassis and tweaked everything and I believe he replaced a couple of parts. After a quick turnaround I received the amp in the same boxes I had shipped it in.

I finally found the time to load the chassis back in the cabinet and fire it up. I can't believe how good it sounds.

Thank you Derrell Stephens for making such a great amp for me and thank you Ed Buffington for breathing new life into it.

Lee, at this very moment in time, my identical amp to yours is being serviced. I look forward to hearing it when I get it back. Those old Evan's Fet 500 Lv's sure have a warm tone Smile

Micky, I'm sure we've swapped serial numbers before, but I forget. What's the number on yours?

Mine is #8550.

Wise guy.

As long as we're passing around numbers, I've got #7023. No idea if it's LV or HV.
That's good news, Lee. Mine needs some TLC and it was my impression from a post last year that the Buffingtons were considering these old models to be outdated and beyond help. Maybe I just misread the situation.
I'll look forward to bringing this one back up to snuff.

Jon.....if you look at the front panel on the extreem left, it will say Evans custom Lv or Hv ....it's in really "tiny" print. I knew mine was an Lv because I bought it off a trusted friend, but I never knew about the small print until I read it on this forum.

This is the amp. I've never been able to find anything denoting hv or lv. Still can't. There is some wear to the screening on the panel so maybe it's gone.

Could well be Jon.....it really was small print and not boldly visable. Your amp still looks good Smile Mine's the small cab with the Eclipse speaker...still a great tone Smile

This might be the one I worked on For John back in the mid 70's. They had built it with wood screws holding in power transistors in Place,One Slipped and shorted out to the chassis and blew the output section up. I installed some professional transistor sockets and put a set of matched 2n3773 Output transistors in it and Bro John Told me it had held up until he finally sold it. Said he never had another problem with it.

Lee: thanks for the kind words

Jon: your amp is a HV model. If Ed needs some HV fets, tell him to call me as I may have a few somewhere.

Hey Derrell. Thanks. When I bought this amp from Ricky Davis I think he said that he thought it was HV but there was always an element of uncertainty. No more.
And thanks for the fet info. I will remember that when I contact the company. Cool.
