A question I have had on my mind for a few days.
I know of at least one pro level player (hey Earnest!! Duncan says Hi) that plays a 12 string universal tuning, or at least has in the past; Buddy Emmons did for a bit.
Who else at the higher levels of accomplishment also play a Universal tuning routinely?

Joe Wright, Maurice Anderson, the late (and sorely missed) Jeff Newman, Al Petty, David Wright, and Jr. Knight come to mind offhand.
Most, if not all of these guys can go from a D-10 to a U-12 without blinking. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Besides Doug Livingston, both Dean Parks and Greg Leisz (all left-coast based players) play 12 string pedal steel guitars (although not exclusively) but none of them play what is conventionally known of as a Universal tuning- mostly extended (as in WAY extended )E9. |

Larry Bell is a great S12 player and a real Pro , but not quite as famous as the big names, but that's the way it goes in the Music Business.....al. _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.

Al Vescovo and Chuck Campbell both play 12 string guitars, but neither are the traditional U-12 (E9/B6).
I believe that Doug Jernigan's 12 string has his experimental hexatonic tuning, not U-12.
As far as I know, Buddy Emmons has never played U-12. He has played 12 string extensions of E9th and C6th.
BJ Cole also plays a 12 string, but I think it's E9th. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Welcome back, b0b.
One of the old Steel Guitarist magazines had a couple of pages of top steelers tunings and pedal set-ups. It listed Buddy's E9/B6 U-12 tuning. His guitar had the D string in the 9th slot, followed by a B, then E and B. The knee lever that lowered the E's also lowered the 9th string down from D to B and the 10th string down from B to G#. That way the first 10 strings were exactly like a typical E9 with the D on the 9th string. Once the E's were lowered, it was in the basic B6 tuning.

I think B.J. said, when asked on the (old) Forum that he uses a slightly modified U-12. For ex. no 3rd pedal.

Buddy's uni-tuning makes perfect sense- so simple but just right. |

Al Vescovo plays a 14 string C6 w/10+6 with E9-like pedals somewhere in there and some other kinda unusual changes. It's pretty universal but not an E9/B6,Bb6 or E6/9 which are the tunings usually described as universal tunings. BTW,I don't know where I fit into the "Pro" food chain but I've made a living playing steel in L.A. since 1973,played with a number of "Names" and I play a 12 string E9/B6.I played D-10s for around 20 years and U-12s since 1993.I wish now I'd switched earlier.
Marty Rifkin who plays with Bruce Springsteen now and is known for his prowess on a Stringmaster also plays a U-12 E9/B6 when he plays pedal gigs - and he plays it real well. |

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Doug Jernigan can play just about any set-up and/or tuning. The man is amazing, even when he was younger. |

And Mr. Vescovo can smoke all 14 strings too. He's been the highlight of the Mesa show for me, every year so far. We need to get him to St. Louis, in the Jazz room and on the main stage. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Johnny Cox was playing a U12 at St Louis this year. I think It was a 9X8 setup. Now that's a loaded U12 and of course he played the fire out of the thing. It was on a D10 frame with a nonpedal E13th on the back neck. |
