I have a very old black 6 string Gibson steel that I bought at a yard sale 15 to 20 years ago that I just remembered I have. The serial # on the back is 57a-28 and it has an original metal pick-up cover. Every thing works great on the guitar but the tone knob is not original and the case is good. Any information on this guitar will be appreciated. Doc.

The first two digits 57 is a factory order number, the A is the year (1935) and the 28 is the instrument number.
Examples of the letter year codes:
A 1935
B 1936
C 1937
D 1938
E 1939
F 1940
G 1941
NOTE: This system was used only between 1935 and 1941

Good luck with a good guitar
Alvin
