The Profex II is a preamp and programmable effects processor. and will work with a low level, instrument level signal.

Most of the rack units are effects only and require a high signal level (e.g. "line" level) and do not work or work correctly with instrument level (you will have a very poor signal to noise ration and thus the signal will be very noisy).

There are a few similar units that work with instrument level and are both a preamp and effects processor, Carvin makes one that I know of but I've never tried it and never seen anyone on the forum mention it. Like 100% of the processors they are primarily designed either for vocals/P.A. work or for rock lead guitar.

Thanks Jack, I am not very good on electronics etc. does what you say mean a Lexicon such as the MPX 1 would be a noisy unit ?

No, they are just not designed to amplify the signal. They are processors. In order to boost the signal from a low instrument level to line level, you need a separate preamp.
