What is a Fender DeArmond lap?

I saw this listed and thought it was a Champion at first. But after looking closer, the pickup is not under the bridge cover. This is new to me. What's the story?

Did you EVER hear of Fender using anything other than their own pick-ups ?

The story? The usual butcher job. Someone stuck a DeArmond pickup on a Fender.

The title has been revised but the description makes no mention that the pickup is changed. I see it has a $250 bid already.

I have one of those DeArmond toaster pickups--has a miniature control box with tone and volume (can be easily disconnected). It's definitely an add on, not even in the proper location. Good sounding pickup, BTW.
