Apple pushed out 11 critical security updates for its Mac OS X operating system, on Monday, Feb 11, 2008.

The latest security updates fix a total of 11 bugs in the Mac Operating system, including eight bugs in the recently released Mac OS X 10.5, known as "Leopard." Apple released the security fixes in conjunction with an 10.5.2 update to Leopard, which includes dozens of other updates.

Some of the security flaws are extremely serious, and could be exploited by hackers to run unauthorized software on a victim's computer, although Apple did not report any incidents of this occurring, yet.

The patches include fixes for Safari, Mail, Launch Services, the Mac OS Directory Services, Open Directory and Parental Controls and some Unix components.

If you are using a Mac computer, running on OS X or newer, you should check to see if you have already received these updates. If you haven't, you should download them manually, using your installed Apple Software Update utility. You can also download fixes from the Apple Download site and install them manually.

After you download this update, there's another one you need to get, too. Named Graphics something. I don't know why it's separate, but it is.

The easiest way to get updates is in the Finder, click on the Apple in the upper left hand corner and select Software Update...

All my iCal entries were duplicated after this update. And some other strange stuff happened, so be sure to back up before you do this.

Cal;
Is there a problem with one of the updates? Have you checked with the Apple Users forum to see if this is a known issue?

Wiz,

I've read at least a dozen blogs and forums today re the update and mine seems to be an isolated incident. This happened on an Intel Mac. I haven't noticed any issues with a PowerPC G4 that I also updated.

My guess is that it was due to a third party app called Anxiety, that integrates with iCal, that I have on the Intel Mac.

If I come across anything interesting I'll post it here.

How long should it take for the 10.5.2 update to download? I tried installing it yesterday and after an hour it was still downloading, that is the little colored wheel that replaced the cursor was spinning like a top. I couldn't get out of it, so I unplugged the computer. Plugged it back in, powered up and everything works fine but I still would like to install the update.

It's around 180MB so, depending on the speed of your connection, you may be waiting a while.

Good enough. I'm going to the library and grocery shopping so I'll let it download while I'm gone. Thank you,

Jude
