What a great day of entertainment and fellowship in spite of less than desirable weather and forecasts ! We were sorry to get a call from Lefty Schrage that he and wife drove all the way down from Iowa and were struck ill and decided to return home rather than to expose others. So sorry to hear that Lefty, I was certainly looking forward to meeting you.
Performers were as follows Terry Bethel, Buck Grantham, Austin Stewart, Jerry Newberry, Tyler Hall, Boo Miller with Lisa Layne, Hank Ruf, Scotty Henderson and Kevin Clemons.
I will not go into further details on this opening post, giving others a chance to chime in with comments. Number two son will be here later today to post pictures on our web site www.ozarksteelguitar.com I'll make a post when they are up.
One of the highlights of the day was Terry's brother and sister-in-law bringing his mother to hear her son perform.

Mrs Ethelyn Bethel will be 95 years young this April the second.

I hope others will add their comments about this event-- More later Bill.

Great Mini Show. I thought it was LOT of fun. It was good to see Terry with his mom. He is VERY PROUD of her. The weather was nasty, but everyone had a GREAT time. Thanks to R.P. on piano, Adam on drums, Randy on bass and Buck on lead. Thanks to Hank and Ann for all the hard work getting the food together. See everyone next time.

Bill I am so sorry I didn't get a chance to chat with you. We got there late and then the weather set in and we too chickened out and headed for the house. BUT we do want to thank everyone for a most enjoyable day of pickin and friendship. The backup band was great and I appreciate all their work. It was a hoot to play with you. Thanks to everyone in the OSGA for inviting us and putting on a great show! Great to see friends like Jerry and Venda, the Newberrys and Stewarts, David Young, and so many others. My only downfall to the day was my own fault. I didn't spy Donna's yummy graham cracker cookies till it was too late. ( I only had one!) Oh well it's early in the year and I am sure they will turn up in my hand by "accident" at another great show. Take care and thanks again for an awesome day.

Hey Scotty. Austin said to tell ya he had a ton of fun jamming with you and the others Saturday night.

If you had showed back up Sunday, you could have taken all those cookies home with you. I ended up bringing them home with us and the kids are eating them as I write.

hey Terry & Hank,
Barb and I can't begin to tell you how disappointing it was for us to find we couldn't be at the show last Saturday. We had so been looking forward to visiting w/ you, Buck, Austin, Jerry, Boo, Tyler, Hank, and Scotty and also getting re-acquainted w/ Kevin again after having not seen him for something like 25 years.
When we started for Branson I wasn't feeling well and by the time we arrived Friday night, the flu-bug crud had a grip on me like a runaway freight train, i.e., shivers, shakes, endless coughing, little sleep, etc. Since returning home, I got meds from my doctor hoping to be in better shape for our Waterloo show coming up this weekend. We sure hope none of you comes down w/ this stuff.
We feel its real unfortunate we couldn't be there to meet Terry's neat mother. Wow! Going to be 95 in April and looking like a million dollars! You must be proud, Terry!
Thanks. Best Regards, Lefty & Barb

The Ozark SGA wants to thank all the steel players,
backup band, everyone that helped support the Association. The weather conditions wasn't very good so a special thanks to all those that could make it.
A thank you goes out to Lefty that drove all the way from Iowa and had to go back home, without playing, because he got sick.

Terry did it again! He put together a real good show! The two youngsters, Tyler and Austin, were just tremendous!Oh, yes, there was another youngster there, Scotty, that was super. And there was another one there that acted just as young and played as fast and furious, that's Mr. Buck Grantham. Oh, I forgot, another youngster was there, Jack Musgrave. Wow, what pickin'! And could we forget young Mr. Mike McGee, he looks young and plays young. He's got to be young. I think Mike knows about everything worth knowing on the steel guitar. Boo Miller and Kevin Clemins,SUPER, they're old enough to be called young, too. When Boo was playing I could hear Buddy Charleton in his playing. Or could it be that his wife's singing made him sound like a million. All of these added so much to a great show. Bob Carden was certainly at his best and Eddie Lange played beautiful! He has such a pleasant touch and sound. Grandpa Jerry really came across with some good stuff. And Hank did superb as usual. Of course the ole "pro", Mr. Terry, was really in good form and we're all so proud of him. What an artist! The band played with great quality and finese! Now, just a word for the Sunday jam. Fantastic! Ann and the gals fed us SOoooo good those 2 days. Hey, Scotty, we have fun like this every other month, so come back and of course, bring Teresa with you. I hope I haven't forgotten anyone. If I did it certainly wasn't intentional. You just have to remember that this old man's memory doesn't always work like it should. I know I've talked about both the Saturday and Sunday shows...it was a super weekend!

Couldn't pass this one up and we missed it on the web site pictures-- Grandma Donna Newberry sang one of Coonnie Smith's hits entitled "Where is my Castle" and grandson Austin Stewart had a little problem remembered the complicated intro and said to her "I practised, honest I did" Smile Great job on it Donna, and Austin, guess what ? Back years ago before Jeff Newman and all the other available helps and fellow players all over the country, I went through the same thing and to make matters worse, Eva sang Connie Smith and Loretta lynn songs (about all of them) and I can tell you Weldon and Hal were the toughest ones going to try to copy. Out of frustration I would call one of them and they'd say "Oh that's pretty easy, just blah blah blah" Shocked I have a lot of respect for Bobby Hempker and Russ Hicks for not putting a contract out on them. Laughing You do fine and you'll be nailing all of them, wait and see.
You two keep performing--we love it !!

Well now--- I may be losing it for sure--Eva tells me it wasn't "Where is my Castle" but she couldn't remember what it was ! A little help Miss Donna ? If I have it wrong, I'll take a seat in the back row and take a nap, maybe that'll help - Rolling Eyes

Hey Bill, Austin says "gee thanks" for reminding everyone he goofed on his kick-off. Very Happy No really, he knows he is going to goof and goof plenty when tackling all those hard licks and kick-offs.

I got one on him that day though. I tried to get him to make a list and he claimed he had it in his head (You know teenagers). Well, he got up there and forgot his list and got flustered and that's why he blew the kick-off. He promised me when he came off stage that he would let me make him a list on paper next time without argument Smile

You mentioned all those kick-offs, Austin took a tape of Russ Hicks and Laney (Tribute to Connie Smith) and has learned every kick-off and turn-around on that tape. Now he's making Mom learn all his favorite songs on the tape so he can play them at shows.

Hey Austin---I said you had a little problem remembering -- not a goof up --there's a big difference and when you're my age you'll really understand that !! Whew whats it been maybe 48 hours and I couldn't remember what darned song it was Embarassed If you're ever playing someplace and grandma is not there, ask Miss Eva to do some for you, only thing is she's lowered them a tone or so with age.
Do you have any cd's of Lorretta's songs ? There are some wonderful Hal Rugg things you'd love playing like for example "When The Tingle Becomes a Chill " and then there's ahhhhh---ahhh-- ahhh- Darn --can't remember Embarassed

Hey Bill, we didn't realize Eva sang. I would love hear her some time. Maybe at the next Branson meeting, she and Austin can work a song up and perform for us. He gets onto Mom for changing keys on him, but we tell him that's good for him.

He has at least one Loretta CD, but he hasn't listened to it much. He used to do some Hal licks, but has kinda gotten away from them lately. He is so young and has so much to learn, he gets on one kick for a while and then another for a while. Then he goes back to old stuff for a while. He is all over the place. Right now he is into Connie Smith stuff.
