I love American Idle. There are several of those going to Hollywood that could, and may, sing country. I look forward to watching them progress through the contest.

I don't like American Idol (or Canadian idol). I think music is an art, not a sport.

A great singer like Don Williams would be disqualified for not oversinging and lack of choreography .

Contests are for horses.

As for the trendies who slavishly follow fashion and the latest musical styles, just remember that fashion is for people that can't make up their own minds.

I agree Andy. Shows like this make a significant contribution to the decline of western civilization! It’s nothing unusual though. TV is full of IDLE, mindless stuff like this.
You have to search hard to find quality TV today. There isn’t much of it, unfortunately.

I was gonna stay out of this one but I agree with Doug and Andy all the way. It's very sad that many people find their music through this show these days. And to take time watch Simon and his cohorts take pleasure in being as nasty as possible to the contestants with questionable,if any talent, that are paraded in front of them is something I wouldn't be proud of. I can think of many artists who likely would have never been heard of if it had existed early enough to be the outlet for what the public buys into. Say...Johnny Cash, Neil Young Bob Dylan, etc. The list goes on. Can you imagine for instance the ridicule Burt Bacharach would have suffered if he had to appear on that show to sing one of his own songs? American Idol has contributed practically as much to the demise of music as MTV has. I can't understand it and don't want to. But then again...some people eat Foie Gras. I would rather take a shower in a New Delhi sewer drain than to watch that show.

I agree on all counts!

Anyway, why would I waste time in front of the TV set watching a lacklustre cover version of something. The programme might have some merit if it contained some original music.

The evil at the root of it all, though, is the way people are possessed of this insane desire to be on television, however they have to demean themselves to do it.

Well said!

I have never actually watched this show, I've only seen short clips of it and reports About it on the news... but from the little bits I've seen, it looks to be scripted, heavily edited, and more about the judges than the singers. I feel sorry for the contestants who are being used and made fools of...and sorry for the viewers who waste valuable time watching this trash. How dumbed-down has our culture become? :?

How dumbed-down?

Well, my wife and I unwittingly went to a Super Bowl party (we thought it was just a night out at our neighbours' house), and I was dismayed to hear the assembled company actually discussing the relative merit of the various TV commercials shown in the course of the game.

If confirmation was needed that the viewing public has been brainwashed, then there it was. Some of them were even looking forward to the 'critique' the following day on morning television - not on the game, but on the adverts!!!!!

'American Idol' is just more of the same. It makes me very sad.

I kind of enjoy it. This early in the season it's all silliness but some gifted people will emerge. As for the judges, it's time to replace Paula Abdul. She appears to be severely ...err, medicated, most of the time.

Hey guys, it's a marketable commodity. It's show business. Simon Colwell, owns American Idol and Britain's Got Talent.

He is the person who owns the people who wins these talent contest. The man owns two record labels, a talent agency and music promotion company.

What you see on those shows is scripted far beyond what you could possibly believe.

What you saw in Britain's Got Talent; (exe; Paul Potts), would never happen on American Idol. The people of Europe still have an ear for musical talent where as in North America, showmanship rules the roost.

True... and the public eats it up like it's something spontaneous and real. Oh well, that's show biz.

15 minutes of fame Warhol said.

Some only deserve the time it takes for
a match to go out.
Or the vacilating thumb to change the remote.

But they'll TRY for the full 15 minutes; no doubts.

Discernment is a lost art in FAR too many quarters.

I have watched it a few times this year mainly because its funny but sadly laden with bad taste...The people paraded on camera to make fools of themselves is a total set up and they surely have been eliminated long before the broadcast...But to let Simon completely humiliate them with his comments that is totally nonsense and borders on cruelty..The American Public supports a non American poking fun at wanta bes under the guise of "AMERICAN IDOL"...A few do reach stardom from the show but I guess basic Kareoke laden talent shows are what the programmed masses are into now...Imagine seven years have come and gone but idol plunges on....and on and on

Simon is a bottom-feeding parasite with a pimp mentality, plain and simple, but he is a god to people who worship money!

I agree, AI is just so much bad entertainment. My take is, don't take it too seriously, for these things too shall pass ..... :|

And so... we actually should worry if
this kind of person is 'American' or not????

A moot point at best.
A waste of jingoistic instincts at worst.

It won't be long before the crazies are gone and then we'll see something worthwhile. For me it definitely wasn't a waste of time listening to Melinda Doolittle last season...still haven't gotten over that she didn't win. :(
I don't feel too sorry for anyone Simon Cowell insults. After seven seasons any would be contestant knows the risks going in. Sure, he's hard to take, but most of the people he comes down on are in serious need of a reality check.

Seriously: There are those that believe they have a shot and don't go on the show to be humiliated..Some simply are asking for it but not all.I admire his honesty and in most cases his judgemeny but his arrogence gets old..I wouldn't have anything against Simon taking the show to Canada or any Country that would love his talented judgements..Would there be any support for an CANADIAN IDOL? Surely theres a lot of people in other Countrys that would just love to be made fun of...Sanjia made the top 7 that goes to show you anythings possible....How many of the past winners are under contract to SIMON?....Anyhoo back to the fact that its a highly promoted show and the phone companys love it...
