Thanks for that picture Richard. I had always thought that Ed play a six string bakelite.

Seems I recall Ed played a 7 string Ric Bakelite...hard to determine on that old pic...looks like 8.

Anyway, for those who never knew Ed Van Cleaf,
you can now see he was a good looking dude, (played a swinging steel !) Memories!!! Thanx Dick for posting the pic. Very Happy

I found some old video of Ed playing a 7-string Ric but am still looking to determine his tuning. I know on some songs he tuned the 2nd string up.

I know Ed used an abbreviated B11 by tuning C to C# and using the first five strgs of A6 for his B11 and flatting the mid E and using a split strg slant to get the B11 sound when he felt it was necessary. He would play (My boat is sailing) chimes using E C# A skip G, use mid E.

He certainly had a nice tone and technique. I wasn't aware that he played a bakelite, makes sense though Smile
