Anyone know where Gary is now? Since the Dirk Bentley gig, Gary seems to have gone underground. He's a very nice guy and a super player.

Jim Bob, apparently you aren't a Brooks & Dunn fan, because even though Dierks Bentley has had quite a bit of success, I would think the gig with Brooks & Dunn is a lot more above ground, and I would also guess a more lucrative paying job.

I think he has been with Brooks & Dunn at least two years now, to elaborate on Tommy's post.

Gary played for McBride & The Ride and Dwight Yoakam before joinin' Dierks. He was with Dierks until 2005 or 2006, when he joined Brooks & Dunn's band. He did many sessions with Dierks and Sara Evans to name a few artists.

Probably the wrong thread for this, but I'd love to see some tab for Gary's "Resophonic Rodeo." Outrageous resonator guitar in G6 tuning.

Ken, I'd like to see any of his tab for either pedal steel or dobro. The guy is a monster. I worked with him in SoCal in 1978. At that time, he was using a fiddle bow on the top string of the E-9, making some outrageous sounds. Brooks and Dunn are lucky to have him IMO.

I used to play with a Dallas band that played the Grizzly Rose in Denver and we opened for Dierks just as he was coming on the scene.

Gary was with him then and he walked up to me as I was setting up my Carter and introduced himself. He told me to sit down at his steel and check it out which no other major act player had offered before.

He was playing a Sho-bud through two Nashville 400's with those chrome outlines of women you see truckers mudflaps mounted right in front of the speakers on the grille cloth.

When they took the stage Gary wore it out on steel and dobro.

I just spoke with Gary today as he was on his way in to the studio to do another recording, and he's doing great, just extreamely busy (which is no surprise to me at all!) Gary records with many great artists and he does a lot of session work in Nashville for some of the biggest names in the industry, and has recorded and performed with names such as, Highwayway 101, McBride & The Ride, Ricky Skaggs, Dwight Yoakum, Dierks Bently, to name a few, and he is now a regular part of the act with Brooks & Dunn!

Gary is one of the greatest friends I've ever had, and we go back more than 35 years together. When it comes to "entertainment" Gary is a definition of the word. A nicer guy can't be found! My only regret is that I don't get to see and talk to him no where near as much as I would like to.

Thankyou to everyone for the very kind words. To answer a few questions posted in this thread.....yes....I have been with Brooks & Dunn for a little over 2 years now and it's been a total blast (as was the Dierks Bentley tour!!!).
The last few years have seen more master recording sessions than all of my previous years combined. I really don't think it could be much more fun than it has been lately between recording, touring and playing downtown on Broadway. As crazy as it may sound I look forward to those club gigs every bit as much as the recording and touring. Nashville is one of the few places I know of where you can still play live music in a club for 4 straight hours, seven nights a week. I prefer to play with the bands that stretch out and jam a bit and take a few chances. Too much fun!!!
By the way, that WAS me in the beret years ago with McBride and The Ride. That all started when Highway 101 wanted me to trade in my cowboy hat for something more "rock and roll" and it kind of stuck with me for awhile. Speaking of which, Terry McBride not only writes with Ronnie Dunn but he is also playing bass on our tour these days. Now that's definitely an instant party! Thankfully I'm back wearing my cowboy hat again. Kind of funny looking back on it when you see guys like Bono of U2 wearing cowboy hats nowadays......lol
Danny my friend.....you are a true gentleman and icon in the steel guitar world. Thankyou for all you've done for so many players and for promoting the steel guitar relentlessly!!!
Take care.......Gary

Holy Cow! We flogged "Tomorrow's sounds today" and "Population Me" around a couple years ago. The consensus was that it's some of the most tasteful pedal steel work ever. I love that sound!

I'm working on "Dreams of Clay". The break has got me plum baffled. I'm gonna keep at it, but if anybody can shed light on that I'd be eternally grateful.

I've got a secret on Gary...

When I was in LA in the late 70s early 80s Gary was in my sub book but he usually couldn't sub because he was working on his original music, which as I remember he described as prog rock (e.g. Floyd, Yes, Crimson, etc)

Gary's such a great country/swing player, I'd love to hear some of that stuff he was working on back then. I'll bet it's worth listening to.

Recently Gary played blues lap steel at the NAMM show
in Anaheim,CA for Eminence speakers along with Tomo
Fujita. As with everything he plays, (pedal steel, resonator guitar, lap steel,) he absolutely amazing!

Here's a link to some You Tube footage.

I first met Gary while he was on tour With McBride and the Ride. My local band opened for them. After the gig I talked with Gary, who was totally approachable, friendly, funny, and a really good guy. I expressed to him that I was networking to try to get out of playing clubs, and was trying to take a serious approach to a career as a player. He was receptive and gracious. Several months later, out of the blue, he called with a referral to play in the house band at The Neon Armadillo in Disney World Orlando. (a world class venue) I got the audition (and the gig) based on his generous referral. I did the gig for a year. It was a great training ground to hone skills and a professional approach. Gary and I stayed in touch, and he came to Orlando frequently, and we always visited. When I decided to leave Orlando and move to Nashville, I called Gary to let him know I was coming. He got me an audition to play with a major Artist within 3 days of my arrival in town. I got the gig and was on my way. I stayed busy as a full time player. I always had a good or great tour. Whenever a tour ended, he was a great source of information and referrals. Gary is so widely respected in the industry, that a word from him is a really valuable thing, and it carries a lot of weight. I have been out of the Nashville loop now for over 15 years, and I pursue my career out of NY. I will never forget Gary's kindness, class, talent and generosity. Everyone deserves some good luck and a break every now and then. I got my break from Gary. The classy ones are the ones who pay it forward. That's Gary. I will be eternally grateful. My best to you Gary...call me whenever you are up this way. Sincerely, Your friend, John

Gary owned my white steel for a while.

He traded me a wood body for it, which I sold to the guitar's original owner, and then decided he preferred a D-10 to an S-12 and sold it back to me.

Great player and a real nice guy.

Gary, are you using the fiddle bow on steel any? I remember that from the old Steel Guitarist mag that Tom Bradshaw had. Great interview.

Here's a photo I thought I would share with all of you of Gary playing one of his Desert Rose guitars at a Brooks & Dunn concert.
