For the last week I have had the pleasure of visiting the great country of Norway. I have been staying with fellow forumite, Steinar Shroder just north of Oslo. Steinar has been a great host, getting to see Oslo, flying north to Alta, visiting Bergen, plus playing around with his 68 ZB Custom!!!!! I also got to set in with his band, Bakersfield, a Buck Owens tribute band. Let me tell ya, these guys do a great job!!!!
While in Bergen, we visited Dag Wolf, talked steel guitars, listened to some fine picking, and treated to dinner. Dag is a super player and nice guy to boot. We then went to visit Egil Skjelnes. We got a little preview of his latest CD project in the works. He played with so much taste and feeling, very smooth. The hospitality of everyone here has been great. The weather has been a little cold but it has been well worth the trip. Flying back to Kentucky tomorrow morning, almost hate to go. I will say this, steel guitar is alive and well in Norway!!! Well worth getting to hear these three fellows play. Back to work soon. |

Greg, thanks for posting this. Yes, Norway is a great country. It's people are genuine and hospitable. I know...I am a Norwegian myself, from a few years back, before becoming a Canadian citizen.
I am sure you were treated well by Egil and Dag. They are two of Norway's finest steel players, and SO devoted to their craft. I am planning a trip back to Norway in the summer(weather is a tad nicer for an old guy in July or August) Can't wait to hook up with new friends in the music business.
I hope to meet Steinar Schrøder also. He is one of the pros for sure.

Yes,indeed, Mr. Jones paid my ZB 1108 and me a most welcome visit here in Norway, and he is now on his way back to Kentucky to begin rehearsals for the upcoming season in Renfro Valley, - where he is the staff steel player.
What Greg doesn`t know about ZB`s is probably not worth knowing, and he has tweaked 1108 to a capital T!
He even put the Tom Brumley set up on it, but since we`re both "Brumleyologists," - hey, whaddya expect??
Bent, I thank you for your kind words about me, but I am definitely not a pro, - merely a rank amateur.
Greg met up with two of our real Norwegian pro`s, Egil and Dag, and they are among the "flagships" of the Norwegian "steel fleet." Dag will perform at this year`s Dallas Convention, and Egil is recording his second solo cd, so it`s full steam ahead for both of them.
Like I said, Greg is now flying the Atlantic going home, and you`re lucky to have a man of his talents over there Stateside.
As a player, as a person, and as a ZB expert, - he`s just a great guy in all respects.
Two other ZB gentlemen I have had the good fortune of getting to know - Billy Knowles and Tom Brumley - are likewise wonderful guys.
Is there some profound ZB factor at work here??
Take good care of Mr. Jones stateside, or we will send some vikings over to kidnap him! |

Had the pleasure of meeting Dag and Leif Aase in
The Fiddle and Steel bar, Printers Alley in
Nashville back in 1997 (I think I got the year right ). My wife Lin had a CD from them called
"Country Action". I remember it well as Dag took
the rise out of me and my ZB jacket I was wearing.A really
nice guy.The guy farthest away was the proprietor
of the bar, can't remember his name though.
