I`m in the process of re-roding,cleaning and setting up my MSA classic.(thanks for all youre adviceon roding, especialy Doug S.) I know I want the standard Emons tunning 3pdl-4kn set up. What about pedal 4 and 5? I love the Bakersfield sound, maybe a MOONEY lick pedal. I love MIKE JOHNSON style too. What tunning does he have? Any ideas? |

A lot of people lower their G#'s to G on the first pedal, then have the standard A-B-C. After that, the "Franklin" pedal is pretty common for the inside pedal. It lowers strings 5, 6 and 10 a full step.
I won't recommend what I do with my 5+5 copedent, because it's wrong. It's just too ingrained in my reflexes after all these years for me to change it.
Remember that a person's style doesn't come from his copedent. His copedent and style both come from how he thinks about music. I used to think that Ralph Mooney's odd copedent was what made his licks. Then I heard Jeff Newman and JayDee Maness playing Mooney's style on totally different tunings. That's when I finally realized that the licks weren't made by the copedent - the licks were made by Mooney's brain. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Thanks for youre replie Bob. But could you be more specific,I`m not too smart about these things. Do you mean strings 3 and 6? Is that what MOONEY used? What about what TOMMY WHITE uses on pedal 4. Whould that be more usefull? Thanks again for youre replie. I`m shure these questions seem dumb to you guys that are pro`s.But for me there complicated I just want to set her up once and start playing whith everything hooked up. |

Yes, the G# strings are strings 3 and 6.
Ralph Mooney doesn't play a standard E9th. Also, he plays with both feet on the pedals. What I'm trying to say is that it's not his copedent that makes him sound the way he does - it's his brain.
Matching some famous player's copedent won't make you sound more like him. You have to get inside his licks and understand how they work. That's why JayDee and Jeff can sound like Mooney even though their tunings are completely different.
I mention the G# to G change because it's a useful pedal. Sorry, but I don't know what Tommy White's 4th pedal does. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Thank-you very much for youre replie bob. I`m gonna give that a try, and the Franklin pedal on 4. I`m gonna add the 2nd sting pull to the knee that pulls string 1-7. I`ve never used the 1st string pull( I usualy pull with my finger).I`ve notice that both TOMMY and PAUL both have such a pull. Thank-you again. |
