It's all in the head..try this ,record yourself playing your steel , then play back what you have recorded, I'll bet that what you hear on the recording is not what
you heard when you were recording.....

Why is it I can twist all of the knobs and turn all of the screws one day to achieve a tone I really really like, turn the system off, come back the next day, turn everything on with no settings changes, and the sound sucks?

pretty much its as simple as a fellow playing
his instrument from the heart . i believe
it is a gift that you are born with not
every one gets its and very few no the differance.. i think tone is in the hands in the feet in the way you set behind the guitar the way you happend to hold your mouth that day.. it varys
from day to day for better or worse But you either
have it or you dont its a nack its not something one can learn from a book or video or someone saying hold this finger out roll that finger under ect..
yes bobbe wants to sell guitars and that is probably why he says no its not .. but bobbe has that nack and he knows what im saying i promise.
just my two cents on "TONE"

I think there is a lot of confusion in the perception of tone.
With a good amp and a quality guitar anyone can dial in a great tone.
If You play an intro or solo note for note the way it has been played by any of the Great players I guess You will not sound as good,whilst your single note sounds good, your execution of the rest of the phrase will probably lack the exact technique the
"Pro" uses
Do We then say "Tone is in the hands"when We mean the use of tone is in the hands.

Because the word HAND'S is not there then tone or timbre is not in the hand's.....

Yes, this debate is talking APPLES and ORANGES. Good tone (timber?) is not ALL about either the guitar or the hands, to the exclusion of the other. Cmon, can't we recognize that it is a combination of many many factors??

Kinda reminds me of the arguments between man and wife, when neither one is really listening to what the other one is saying.

Maybe we need some counseling...

Moving your picking "hand" closer to the neck sounds WAY more "bass"-ee, to me.
Playing in the area near or over the pickup sounds WAY more treble-ee, to me.
There is a huge amount of tonal range available "at your fingertips", so to speak.
They all sound the same to me untill someones hands touch them.

TONE! TONE! we dont need no stinking TONE! as long as we can play louder than the stupid lead guitar player and keep the keyboard player on the other side of the stage
No-sir-ree bubba, aint got no time to worry about that tone thing, too much trouble.

I ordered tone with the last steel I bought,,,,,man what a rip off!! They forgot to tell me I needed good right hand technique and bar control along with decent equipment.

So I said ok,,,,send me an Emmons a SGBB a NV400 and oh yea one of those NV122s & throw in a Profex and one of those BJS bars & anything else that will give me great tone,,,I mean tone to the BONE!

UPS droped all my tone off at the front door YIPPIE

Still no tone

So I called em back & said ,,just where did Lloyd buy all his tone from & they said he made his own tone?

So now im gonna make my own tone by golly, just as soon as I get the plans

If a steel fell over in the forest and there was no-one there to hear it would it have any tone? (tone koan)
