Came across this:
http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/MBGT1R.htm

I've played Beard's wooden GoldTone resos, and they are great sounding instruments. I didn't know about the metal bodies until a few minutes ago.

Has anyone checked these out?

I own a P. Beard sig spider bridge wood body round neck. Its outstanding for the money, I was eager to try the biscuit bridge 12 fret. Well built but imho did not have the 'magic' of the signature spider cone dobro.
Some awkward questions need to be asked re the cones. If they are Beards we need to know if beard has a 'budget cone' for the cheapos and an up market cone for the £500.00 ish models. Once educated we can make correct observations. Maybe Gold Tone could inform us.

May I suggest you contact Gold Tone directly with such a question and then share your findings with us all.

We use the same BC-1 in all of our spider bridge guitars, Gold Tone and hand crafted.

Likewise, we use the same Beard BC-9.5 in biscuit bridge guitars, Gold Tone and hand crafted.

And there you have it.

Thanks, Howard...I was hoping you'd show up

Any chance of a GRB finding its way to Gruhn's anytime soon? I'd like to compare it to a National O Deluxe that I played there yesterday.

I had a very quick response from goldtone customer services which makes a very refreshing change ! It read as follows

The Paul Beard (wood body) regular model and Deluxe model all have the same cone and spider.
The Paul Beard metal body dobros have a Paul Beard cone and biscuit style that is designed specifically for the metal bodies.
The differences in tone that you are referring to between the regular model and deluxe model is because the regular model is mahogany and the deluxe is maple. These differences between the 2 models would reflect the different tones..
Kind regards,
Emilie

I consider Howard as a Friend of mine...gave me the run of the Beard room in Dallas to try out everything...answed all my questions......I think he quoted about $50 for either cone or spider...made by Beard as I am toying with putting them in my 70 year old Australin made Dobro...not decided yet.
Howard even let me demonstrate their dobro to a potential buyer...didnt make a sale...Howard blamed my playing....I looked over my shoulder and (GULP !!!!)...Mike Auldridge was standing behind me !!!!
A week or so later I was Downtown Nashville....in Gruhns...big row of old and new Dobros...proper brand and a few other brands too....of course I walked along the line and just twanged each of them...[as you do] and two or three really jumped out at me for tone and extra volume...and would you believe they were Beard Goldtones!
I have no association at all with Beard apart from being friends with Howard...so this is unsolicited......but if they want to send me a free Dobro in payment for this Add well I am sure we can come to some arrangement !!!!!

At the moment I'm using a lower end model Washburn regular acousticc guitar with a nut lifter tuned to C6/A7 or sometimes E7. Would this Gold tone Beard metal bodied round neck guitar be better suited for this tuning than the GTB mahogany squareneck ? I don't play the GBDGBD bluegrass tuning. Thanks in advance for any advice
