Last night Jack Musgrave and I locked horns playing twin steels at the big show in Nixa, Missouri. Jack is an impressive player who can play as good as anyone you hear in Nashville or Branosn. We had a full house and the dance floor was full all night long. We had the great Earnie Jackson on fiddle, Don Tummons on bass, Wendel Daniels on lead and harmonica, Wayne Florang on drums, and Jackie Wilson on lead and rhythum. We have 4 great singers in our group, but several other great name singers came and sang with us lastnight. Many great pickers showed up and stayed all night. The great Roger Blevins and his wife were there. The great Bob Scrivner and his wife were there. The great Leonard Robertson, Bill Lemon and 11 others great pickers I noticed. One steel player from Texas heard about the big show and came. Jack Musgrave was using a vintage LDG Lloyd green single neck with pad Sho Bud through a Sho Bud amp. I was using a vintage Emmons Legrand II single neck with pad through a Fender tube amp. Both Jack and I had 15 inch speakers. It was not about a contest between me and Jack, it was ALL about having fun, and that we had! I can tell you this much, Jack out played me. Crowds keep building each time we play, and most of the pickers in the area are starting to show up. The pickers in the area know it is going to be something exciting to see twin steels on stage going wild. Trust me, Jack Musgrave and I gave them a full double dose of E9th pedal steel guitar last night, and the crowd loved it. So a show doesn't have to be built around just singers.
In two weeks we do it again and I will be joined by the great Mike Magee of Everton, Missouri. Twin steels again.
