As usual, at this time of the year, I've had a wee dram, and my mind has started musing on all things pedal steel (and other things as well, but that's another story Smile)

My mind got wondering on why on earth do I posess more than one pedal steel guitar ?

I no longer gig, so I don't need a steel set up at home to practice on, there is no logical reason for having three steels in the house, yet I can't bring myself to sell any of them.

I suspect that I am not alone Winking

I wish i could come up with a top ten reasons list.
No 1 because you can
No 2 becauseYou think you deserve them
No 3 prehaps you are indecicive on whis has the best tone
No 4 none are black
No 5 someone long ago told you would never be a steel player you are saying hey see you were wrong
No 10 You are married and this is how you express your masculanity and dominance over the one person in the world that has the two things, well three, you desire, sex money and power. But really its no 1
the common denominator is what you want as opposed what someone else wants
Don't you love physcology. Its not about the id its about youd dude

Sorry guys if my post comes over as arrogant, that's the last thing I intended Embarassed

Fact is , I picked these steels up many years ago, all secondhand, some in need of repair, I've gigged them all, and now they have too much sentimental value for me to sell them

Lets' see, why more than one guitar....
1. I have a very understanding wife.
2. I explain to her that instruments are good investments. (Perhaps this
is a bit of a stretch.)
3. I live in North Dakota, Beijing, and Thailand at various times of the year
& have no desire to have a steel guitar possibly damaged when traveling
nor do I wish to enrich the the airlines. (They recently went from a 70
lb. limit to 50 lbs per bag & on international flights and charge bigtime
for overweight.
4. There are too many fine psg builders out there & their products are
tough to resist.
5. I am under the illusion that I will get better with a different guitar.
6. I'm from Pittsburgh and am a big Steeler fan.

Merry Christmas all of you steelers, steve t

I have 3 because I live on a hillside and have to contend with stairs to get from my house to the street.

I have one in the living room for woodshedding, one in the studio in the basement for recording, and one in the garage at the bottom of the hill to take when I play out. My amp is also in the garage.

I think Steve hit the nail on the head with #5, (at least for me). Confused

Richard,
Same for me. However I still gig on the weekends and use all of mine except for the the Sho-Bud. I like them and they'd be hard to replace if I sold them. Nick

You weren't aragont.I did my poor job at humour. I like a lot of people own only one. Why, because I am selfish and don't want to share anymoney with anyone. Now if someone could convince me I would sound better with a better guitar. I would happily part with my hard earned, not really that hard dinero. However, when I first started out I bought cars because. I thought girls would like me. It didn't work. I suspect my mistress the steel is going to be the same old selfish demon and refuse to comform to my nightly dreams and desires, Even if they are pure instead of naughty. I'm to old to run from adoring women anyway. Never really wanted to. Thats why I never atained the fame I so richly deserve. God new that I would abuse his wine, his song and his women. Sure are a lot of Is in this.

[1] The sound I produce doesn't sound like Buddy Emmons. Maybe it's the fault of the guitar. If I buy a new one maybe I'll sound better. Rolling Eyes

[2] I don't like to get rid of my old one ...or two.

[3] My wife never goes into my den in the sub-basement, so she doesn't know how many I have... Winking

[4] I collect things. Cool

[5] I keep different instruments in different tunings.

But there are other questions that this thread suggests...

[a] Why would anyone want two identical instruments ?

[b] Why do you need both a pedal steel and a non-pedal steel, when you can play a pedal steel as a non-pedal steel just by keeping your feet off the pedals ? (Yes, you might need to retune.)

Gee, Richard, my wife asks the same question. Quite often, now that I think of it. My answer is always the same: "They're an investment." Smile

There is only one reason to own more that one guitar and that is, there is no such thing as having too many guitars.

Mine are as identical as possible, so that I don't have to mentally switch gears when I play the different ones. I make the same moves, regardless of which guitar I'm playing. There are some subtle differences between the 2 older guitars, and some not so subtle differences between them and the Milly, but basically I don't have to think about which guitar I'm using. I just sit down at whatever one happens to be in front of me and play.

I've never heard a pedal steel guitar come even close to the tone of an older non pedal guitar, even if you don't use the pedals. No comparison!

Because a Tele sounds different than a Strat sounds different than a Les Paul, etc.

Each one I have brings out a different part of my musical vocabulary. I listen to a song and decide which one of "me" can address it most effectively.
