I need to put threads on a pull rod for my MSA Legend. It's a factory rod, ever so slightly larger than 7/64 at 0.110" and appears to be stainless steel. What Die size should I use to cut the threads on this rod. I have access to 4-40 and 5-40 dies. On my Emmons push pull I had a hard time doing this bedause the threads were "rolled" on and not cut with a die. Help!

I use 5-40 on the .109" rods which is what is used on the Legends. |

Jim,
Whoops! I have 4-40 and 6-32. Just ordered a 5-40 from Mcmaster Carr for $11. Our tool room had the tap but not the die. Thanks for the quick answer!

Wouldn't it be the best to call the people at MSA?

JD,
I was going to call or email them but i wanted an immediate answer and was going to grab the die and run with it as soon as I got the answer. Hopefully posting this publicly will give the answer to others if they search for it later on. In fact I did a search and found where this question has already been answered for a 0.110" rod.
I had bought 3 pull rods originally from MSA and used about half their length ,the threaded ends of them. Now I am using the other half of the rods for more changes and need to thread them. Actually. it's pretty simple, from what I've read in the past few days, a #5 Die is the only close choice and 5-40 is the most common #5 die. 4-40 and 6-32 just don't come close to working with the rod's diameter. Then there's the big blue Machinery's Handbook sitting on my desk. Please don't force me to actually read that!

OK, I see, Greg, you are trying to do something during the holidays
I don't know which die they currently use on new MSA'a. I used to work on the old ones and my experience was that the die was actually smaller than the diameter of the rods. It was quite difficult to thread these rods nicely.

You're right JD, I use a 5-40 die on the 1/8" rods for the older MSA's. I use an adjustable die and open it up slightly which makes it a little easier. It makes the tuners fit a little tighter also, which is good. I thread these in my lathe, using a die holder in the tailstock, and a collet in the headstock. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

Ok, mission accomplished! I got a HS Steel 5-40 adjustable die and since I didn't have cutting oil handly, I used TriFlo lube. The threads I cut came out just like the factory ones and are plenty deep enough with good diameter to grip the nylon tuner with authority! Thanks for all responses.
