A few weeks ago I placed a blocking exercise
video on Youtube and it received great response.
I have just added Video 2 which features the
performance of the C Major Scale showing
the right and left hand technique that I use.
Block after each note..note right hand movements.
I hope it is of help to beginning Lap Steelers
as there seems to be an increase in interest
for the Lap or Non pedal Steel Guitar.

More good stuff for the beginner, Roy.
Will you be compiling further technique vids using this/your youtube 'profile'? That's a much more useful option to the usual YT vid section.
And, will you be doing multi-string muting examples?

Thanks for posting that Roy. While I don't consider myself a beginner, I am always trying to improve my technique, and close observation of others is invaluable for that purpose.
The right hand (or picking hand, for the lefties) is so crucial to the tone/sound we produce. This obviously goes for all "picked" or "plucked" instruments...be it steel guitar, mandolin or whatever. Jeff Newman posted a great essay about this on his website a while back. (not to mention the long running topic about tone being in your hands on the Steel Players forum!)
And Ron, your information on your web page was also very helpful, mahalo for sharing! I think I need to get my hands on that Jerry Byrd course...

Thank you and glad to be of help.
Ron, yes I would like to do more video
in the future. I am pretty new at it and
would like to learn some editing skills.
What I have put up so far are "raw" files
using my Digital Camera which only allows
about 30 seconds.
If and when I can improve the sound factor
I would like to try some complete songs
but that is a "down the road".

Roy, I was wondering when you were gonna go "high tech" and share your vast knowledge and beautiful music on YouTube. Listening to you play is inspiring and now being able to see how you do it makes it so much better. Good luck with your new endeavour from one of your students and fan.  |
