I'm teaching myself non-pedal steel on an 8 string Sierra I bought from a forumite. I mainly play roots rock-flavored music. I have been enjoying all the sacred steel music I can stir up, and got Derek Campbell's sacred steel instructional video for Christmas.

He uses B E B E G# B C# E. I like the top five strings--it seems to be the best of both worlds--bluesy, but with that 6th in there for a little country flair. But the lower three go soooo loooow. I don't see a need for a B that's a fourth below the low E on a standard guitar.

Is there a different standard tuning that might be something like that but doesn't go so low? What about something like E B C# E G# B C# E? Would that be crazy?

Jim, your tuning looks like the E13 tuning on this page. Check out some of the others also. Click Here

Jim, you might prefer the E6 I've favored lately, (hi to low) G# E C# B G# E B E which has the old E major with Don Helm's top half. The top 4 strings on my steel are all 16 gauge.

Try this one: E B D E G# B C# E.

Or:E A C# E G# B E (notice it has E major and A major). Or try this with a low F# instead of low E.

Try to find out about all the tunings you can. Some are better for chords, some for single lines and some are better for different styles of music. One thing is for sure however. They are all compromises.
